Pacers' roll hits seven vs. Knicks

INDIANAPOLIS - Jermaine O'Neal had 27 points and 11 rebounds and Ron Artest added 21 points in the league-leading Pacers' 93-70 victory over the Knicks on Thursday night.

Indiana used an 18-2 run in the third quarter to pull away for its seventh straight victory.

O'Neal helped put the game away with 4:37 to play in the third, hitting a hook shot in the lane to give the Pacers a 69-50 lead.

The star forward, who apologized after criticizing fans for booing earlier in the season, slapped hands with several of them after hitting the shot.

Kurt Thomas had 12 points and nine rebounds for New York, which lost for the first time in four games.

Indiana scored 27 off 24 Knicks turnovers and held them below 79 for the eighth time in nine games. The Pacers came into the game leading the league in fewest points allowed, with opponents averaging 81.4.

NETS 102, CLIPPERS 96: Kerry Kittles scored 22 and Jason Kidd had 18 points and 10 assists to lead visiting New Jersey. The Nets led almost all the way, but Los Angeles kept it close before losing its fifth in a row. The victory was New Jersey's fifth in seven road games this season.

MAGIC: The team is close to finalizing a deal to sign Paul Westhead as an assistant. He has coached the Nuggets, Bulls and Lakers, whom he led to the 1980 title.

John Thompson: Don't expect Mourning comeback

LOS ANGELES - For somebody who is facing a kidney transplant and just had his livelihood stripped, Alonzo Mourning is coping pretty well, according to former Georgetown coach and mentor John Thompson.

Unlike Sean Elliott in 2000, Thompson said not to expect Mourning to try another comeback should he get a transplant.

"Absolutely not," Thompson said. "I think he has succeeded. I have told him this, I think he has gone far past most people that ever won a championship with how he has done things in his career and life. He has set an example for a lot of people. I don't think under any circumstances he will make a comeback after surgery."

After Mourning missed last season, his comeback with the Nets lasted 12 games.
