Bulls cruise to crown of their tournament

TAMPA - Rae Rae Sayles scored 15 to lead four Bulls in double figures and added 10 rebounds for her first career double double, leading South Florida to a 73-53 win over Missouri-Kansas City in the championship game of the Best Western Roundball Classic on Sunday.

Jessica Dickson scored 14, Nalini Miller 13 and Andrea Armstrong 10 for the Bulls, and Anedra Gilmore had a career-high 10 assists. Sayles was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and Miller and Dickson joined her on the All-Tournament Team.

The Bulls never led by more than eight in the first 14 minutes but eventually pulled away for a 37-26 halftime lead. They started the second half with a 16-4 run over 5:30 to extend their lead to 53-30 with 14:39 left.

USF cruised the rest of the way and led by a game-high 25 twice.

The Bulls shot a season-best 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the field and made 4 of 6 3-pointers. USF outrebounded its fourth straight opponent, grabbing 42 to the Kangaroos' 34.

FSU 96, HARVARD 82: Tasheika Allen and Trinetta Moore scored 18 each and Florida State pulled away late in the championship game of the Seminole Classic.

Genesis Choice scored 17 and Ganiyat Adeduntan 11 for the Seminoles, who shot 70.4 percent in the second half.

Hana Peljto had game highs of 26 points and eight rebounds for the Crimson, which was within three with 13:59 left but got no closer. Reka Cserny had 16 points and Jessica Holsey 15 for Harvard.

NO. 1 UCONN 76, HOLY CROSS 42: Jessica Moore had 17 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for her third career double double to lead the host Huskies.

Moore, a 6-foot-3 junior center, helped Connecticut outscore the Crusaders 40-14 in the paint. Her first field goal of the game was the first 3-pointer of her career.

Diana Taurasi added 16 points for the Huskies, snapping an eight-game streak of reaching at least 20, and Barbara Turner scored 14.

NO. 3 UT 83, NO. 17 NOTRE DAME 59: Shyra Ely scored 20 and Ashley Robinson 14 for the host Vols. Tennessee led all game as the Irish struggled with shooting and defense. Notre Dame is 0-16 against the Vols, the only opponent the Irish have played at least 10 times and never beaten.

NO. 4 DUKE 66, NO. 25 AUBURN 57: Alana Beard scored four of her game-high 27 during a decisive 11-point run late in the second half to lead the Blue Devils in the title game of the Duke Basketball Classic. The Blue Devils have won their tournament 13 of its 16 years.

NO. 6 STANFORD 61, NO. 10 GEORGIA 59: Nicole Powell had 21 points and 12 rebounds as the Cardinal survived a frantic Bulldogs rush to earn its 30th win in its past 31 home games. Stanford's Kelley Suminski and Susan Borchardt combined to make 8 of 13 3-pointers.

CLEMSON 69, NO. 15 RUTGERS 64: Julie Talley scored 10 of her 15 in the second half to lead the host Tigers. Nikki Jett hit a 3-pointer and followed with a three-point play as Rutgers cut an 11-point lead to 53-52. Lakeia Stokes countered with a three-point play to give Clemson a 56-52 lead.

NO. 21 ARIZONA 66, HAWAII 57: Dee-Dee Wheeler scored nine of her 18 during a key second-half run for the Wildcats in the fifth-place game of the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu. Wheeler scored nine straight in a 12-6 run that broke a tie at 41 and gave Arizona the lead for good.
