Military news

Navy Capt. Christopher A. Hase, son of Donna and Wes Hase of St. Petersburg, recently took command of the USS Saipan, an amphibious assault ship based in Norfolk, Va. During the current operations in Iraq, he served as the executive officer aboard the Saipan. He also has served as safety officer and assistant air officer on the USS Iwo Jima and with several helicopter squadrons, the Supreme Allied Command Atlantic and the Joint Staff at the Pentagon. Hase is a 1979 graduate of Auburn University in Alabama. He earned his master's degree in operations analysis and is currently pursuing a doctorate in business management.

Navy Seaman Recruit Justin A. Curp, son of Rhonda and Gregory Curp of St. Petersburg, hasgraduated from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Chicago. He was Training Recruit Petty Officer during basic training and a member of the Recruit Rifle Drill Team. He was a member of a "Hall of Fame" 900 Division. He has been assigned to Mayport Naval Air Station in Jacksonville. He is a 1998 graduate of Lakewood High School.

Seaman Apprentice Michael Sean Brophy, son of Michael Brophy of St. Petersburg, has graduated from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Chicago. He currently is attending special training at the Law Enforcement/Master-at-Arms School at Naval Technical Training Center, Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is a graduate of Gibbs High School, where he was a member of the ROTC.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Cora D. Omari, daughter of Daisy Williams of St. Petersburg, recently reported for duty at Naval Hospital, Jacksonville. She is a 1983 graduate of St. Petersburg High School.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class George C. Wilder, son of Donna G. Wilder of St. Petersburg, has graduated from the Fleet Combat Training Center, Virginia Beach, Va. He has been assigned to the destroyer USS Spruance, based in Jacksonville. He is a 1998 graduate of Lakewood High School.
