TODAY: NO. 2 FLORIDA VS. STETSON

By Times staff writers
Published December 6, 2003

WHEN/WHERE: Noon; Stephen C. O'Connell Center, Gainesville.

TV/RADIO: Sunshine; WDAE-AM 620.

RECORDS: Stetson 2-1; UF 4-0.

COACHES: Stetson - Derek Waugh (29-44, fourth season). UF - Billy Donovan (153-73, eighth season; 188-93 overall).

KEY PLAYERS: Stetson - E.J. Gordon, G, 6-4 So. (16 ppg, 9 rpg); Anthony Register, G, 6-2 So. (12 ppg, 3 rpg); Borislav Djordjic, C, 6-8 Jr. (11.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg). UF - Matt Walsh, G, 6-6 So. (19.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg); Anthony Roberson, G, 6-1 So. (15.7 ppg, 3.5 apg).

NOTES: Florida closes out the week by playing its third game in five days against an in-state opponent. The Gators have won their last 21 against state teams and have a 39-game winning streak over nonconference opponents. Though the Gators scored just 59 Thursday night against UCF, they are averaging 87.8 and have a plus-21 margin of victory. Stetson is playing the second of three consecutive road games, with four players averaging double figures. Florida forward David Lee is again doubtful because of a sprained ankle. He was scheduled to sit out Thursday's game, but played 22 minutes. He expects to sit this one out to get ready for Wednesday's game against Maryland.

TODAY: FSU VS. FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON

WHEN/WHERE: 2; Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center, Tallahassee.

TV/RADIO: Sunshine; WTAN-AM 1340

RECORDS: FD 2-2; FSU 6-0.

COACHES: FD - Tom Green (323-257, 21 seasons); FSU - Leonard Hamilton (20-15, second season; 220-225 overall).

KEY PLAYERS: FD - Gordon Klaiber, F, 6-8 So. (17.5 ppg, 7.8 rpg); Brandon Edwards, G, 6-4 Sr. (13.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg). FSU - Tim Pickett, G, 6-4 Sr. (16.3 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 2.7 spg); Anthony Richardson, F, 6-7 Jr. (13.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg).

NOTES: FSU last started a season 7-0 in 1988-89 when it got to 8-0. ... The Seminoles, perhaps predictably given how many players Hamilton is using, have run into a problem when they've jumped out to big leads. Concentration and defensive intensity wane and an easy win becomes far more difficult. See the Mississippi game when they led by 16 in the second half and had to hold on, thanks to tenacious defense, for a 66-60 win. ... FSU leads the series 2-0. The last meeting, also in Tallahassee, was an 85-43 FSU romp on Jan. 11, 1978.

Nebraska - John Turek, F, 6-9 Sr. (15.3 ppg, 11.3 rpg); Nate Johnson, G, 6-1 Sr. (14 ppg, 62.5 FG percentage); Corey Simms, G/F, 6-5 Jr. (8 ppg, 6.7 rpg).

NOTES: Nebraska was picked 11th in the Big 12 by the Sporting News after losing 14 of its final 17 last season to finish 11-19. USF reserve forward Brandon Brigman is expected to miss his third straight game with a hernia. Baxter is averaging 21 points at home and 3.5 on the road. The Cornhuskers committed just seven turnovers in Wednesday's 66-60 home win over Arizona State. Nebraska's 5-foot-8 freshman point guard Charles Richardson hasn't made a field goal 58 minutes into his college career. Four Bulls (Baxter, Mosley, Morris and Brian Swift) average more than 30 minutes.
