The West stopped the East 29-8 in the 4th annual Hillsborough County high school football game Saturday night at Raymond James Stadium.

The quarterback tandem of Sidney Bryant of Chamberlain and David Turner of Jefferson proved too much for the East team. Bryant was 8 of 15 for 81 yards while Turner completed 5 of 12 for 96 yards and a score, a 9-yard strike to Davey May of Jesuit to open the scoring in the first quarter.

Vernon Daniels, a defensive back from Hillsborough who had two interceptions, was chosen the West's MVP and his Terrier teammate, Ricky Ponton, was chosen as the team's offensive MVP. Ponton had 54 yards on six carries.

"This is a wonderful game for these boys and considering that they had only five practices, I think they all did exceptionally well," said East coach Jim Wilt of Brandon. "This is a great thing for high school football here in Hillsborough because it gives all these college coaches here tonight a great opportunity to give these players a final look against great competition."

Maurice Crum of Tampa Bay Tech was chosen the East defensive MVP. Undecided on a college, the linebacker is trying to decide among Michigan State, Pitt, Notre Dame and others. "This game was a lot of fun tonight," said Crum. "Sometimes it doesn't always work out the way you'd like, but it was still a great game."

Tyrone McKenzie of Riverview was chosen the East offensive MVP. He gained 49 yards on seven carries, had a 14-yard reception and completed a pass for 15 yards.

Edmond Nelson of Plant ran an interception back 31 yards for a West touchdown. Alonzo's John Forbes had scoring runs of 3 and 4 yards, and Jefferson's Garrett Myers added a 26-yard field goal to complete West's scoring.

The East scored late when Tony Taylor of Bloomingdale connected with Antonio Brown of Brandon on a 34-yard touchdown pass with 7 seconds left.
