A hot-shooting TCU romps

FORT WORTH, Texas - Marcus Shropshire scored a career-high 17 Monday night to lead TCU to an 84-62 victory over Stephen F. Austin.

Shropshire came off the bench to hit 5 of 7 field goals, including all three 3-pointers and all four free throws for the Horned Frogs. Blake Adams and Corey Valsin had 12 points each and Corey Santee 10 for TCU.

TCU shot 60 percent from the field and 87 percent from 3-point range. Stephen F. Austin shot 35 percent from the field.

TCU took advantage of Stephen F. Austin turnovers, converting 17 into 30 points.

Antonio Burks led the Lumberjacks with 19 points, including 15 off 3-pointers. Dedrick Sanders added 11.

TCU took the lead for good with 18:48 left in the first half. The Horned Frogs led 47-34 at the half.

UTEP 88, HOUSTON 61: Jason Williams and Chris Craig combined for 35 points to lead the host Miners over the Conference USA team.

Texas-El Paso opened the second half with a 12-0 run, six on Craig 3-pointers, to extend its 44-38 halftime lead to 56-38 with 15:45 left.

Williams scored 18 to lead the Miners, and Craig scored 17. Williams was 5-of-7 from the field, and Craig made 5 of 8 3-pointers and had five assists.

TENNESSEE: A football and men's basketball series against Memphis will continue beginning in 2005. A rift developed when Memphis basketball coach John Calipari refused to play a home-and-home series with Tennessee, which recruits in Memphis. The basketball contract calls for eight games to be played on a home-and-home basis by 2013. The football contract calls for the schools to meet five times between 2005 and 2013.

Women

NO. 4 TEXAS TECH 100, PACIFIC 39: Jia Perkins and Chesley Dabbs scored 18 each to lead the host Raiders. Texas Tech scored on its first seven possessions and had six players score in double figures. Alesha Robertson and Natalie Ritchie added 11 points each, and Cisti Greenwalt and Jametra Clark scored 10. Nancy Dinges scored 12 for Pacific.

AP POLL: Connecticut tied Tennessee for No. 1 at being No. 1.

The Huskies were a unanimous choice for the top spot in the Top 25 one day after rallying from a 15-point deficit for a 72-69 victory at Southern Cal.

Connecticut topped its 90th poll to tie Tennessee. UConn's first No. 1 ranking was Jan. 17, 1995, after beating the Vols to replace them atop the rankings.

Tennessee was No. 1 for the first time in the 1977-78 preseason poll and led 63 times before Connecticut first reached the top.

No. 23 Boston College was the only newcomer. Rutgers dropped out.
