ASHBURN, Va. - Patrick Ramsey is done for the season, placed on injured reserve before he has foot surgery.

The Redskins quarterback said Monday he will have surgery on his troublesome right foot within two weeks, prematurely ending his first season as a starter.

"We just really felt like it wasn't going to get better by the end of the season," Ramsey said after meeting with a team doctor.

Ramsey has been bothered by the flareup of an old fracture on the right edge of his foot. The injury's origins are unknown, but it became a problem during training camp and was aggravated the past few weeks.

HIRING GUIDELINES: The NFL has issued 10 guidelines to strengthen its year-old policy to include at least one minority candidate for every head-coaching vacancy. In a memorandum dated Dec. 1, obtained by the New York Times, the league's committee on workplace diversity lists provisions for interviewing coaching candidates, including the documentation of every interview conducted, the elimination of telephone-only interviews and the involvement of the team owner in interviewing finalists for the job.

SPRINTER TO NFL?: British sprinter Dwain Chambers would consider playing pro football if he is banned from track and field for a doping offense, his management group, Stellar Management, said. Chambers, who never has played football, was suspended Nov. 7 pending a hearing into a positive test for the steroid THG.

WR BUYS INTO AFL: Cowboys wide receiver Joey Galloway has joined the ownership group of the Arena Football League's Columbus Destroyers.

BENGALS: Left tackle Levi Jones had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee but is expected back in a week or two.

BRONCOS: Defensive tackle Daryl Gardener was deactivated for the rest of the season for a nonfootball illness. Gardener was suspended twice for conduct detrimental to the team.

CARDINALS: Josh McCown will get his first start at quarterback, replacing Jeff Blake, as coach Dave McGinnis tris to snap a five-game skid.

DOLPHINS: Quarterback Jay Fiedler's status is uncertain for Monday night's game against Philadelphia after he aggravated a knee injury that sidelined him for four games this season.

GIANTS: Kerry Collins, who has started 67 straight games at quarterback for New York, is doubtful for Sunday's game in New Orleans with an ankle injury. Jesse Palmer probably will start for the first time in his three-year career.

JETS: Receiver/kick returner Jonathan Carter likely is out for the year with a sprained left knee.

RAIDERS: Quarterback Rick Mirer said he plans to play Sunday against Baltimore even if his sprained left ankle still aches.

RAVENS: Linebacker Adalius Thomas is scheduled for surgery today on his broken right arm and will miss at least four weeks.

TITANS: Steve McNair had an MRI exam on a sprained left ankle that made walking difficult. Coach Jeff Fisher said his quarterback won't practice this week.

CFL: Autry Denson, Notre Dame's career rushing leader, signed with the Montreal Alouettes.
