Bus attendant's legs broken in accident

TAMPA - A Hillsborough County school bus attendant was hit by a car Wednesday after walking a disabled child across the street at Nebraska Avenue and Patterson Street, police said.

Haywood Wright was taken to Tampa General Hospital with two broken legs and a cut on his head after the 3:30 p.m. accident, said Sgt. Craig Roberts. A hospital spokeswoman said Wright, 66, was still being treated in the emergency room late Wednesday. School spokesman Mark Hart said the bus was taking home special education students from King High School and Williams Middle School when the accident occurred. No students were injured.

Roberts said Frankie Carter, 25, of Tampa, was driving south on Nebraska. Wright had just escorted a child across the street and had begun to cross again, when he stepped in front of Carter's car.

"This was not at a regular street crossing," Roberts said. "(Wright) violated the right of way."

Carter was not charged with causing the accident, Roberts said, but was charged with driving with a suspended license, having no proof of insurance and operating an unregistered vehicle.
