INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone was hospitalized Friday after injuring her back in a spill at Hollywood Park.
Krone, admitted to Centinela Hospital Medical Center, was to have an MRI today to determine the severity of the injury, hospital spokeswoman Janice Yergan said. Hollywood Park spokesman Mike Mooney said the jockey complained of pain in her sternum and rib cage, but was able to move.
Skidoo, ridden by David Nuesch, fractured his right foreleg in the 71/2-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up and fell into the path of Krone and her mount, Clover Situation.
BARN FIRE: Twenty-two horses, mostly thoroughbreds, were left dead after a fire swept through Cross International, a barn in Henderson, Ky.
TENNIS: Aussie champs to return
Andre Agassi and Serena Williams will defend their titles at next month's Australian Open. Williams is coming back from a quadriceps injury that forced her to miss the late part of this season and lose her No.1 ranking. Agassi will try to win a fifth Australian title.
COLLEGES: SJU, Indiana in final
A penalty kick by Sebastian Alvarado-Ralph in the 35th minute led St. John's over Maryland 1-0 and Pat Yates scored on a header in the second overtime to send Indiana past Santa Clara 1-0 in the NCAA soccer semifinals in Columbus, Ohio. The Red Storm and Hoosiers meet Sunday for the title.
GOLF: Harrington leads by 1
Padraig Harrington made four birdies from off the green on the final six holes for 5-under 67 and a one-stroke lead at the Target World Challenge in Thousand Oaks, Calif., over tournament host Tiger Woods, Davis Love III and Chris DiMarco. Harrington led at 3-under 141.
SOCCER: U.S. out at Youth Cup
The United States was ousted at the World Youth Cup, losing 2-1 to Argentina in overtime in the quarterfinals at Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Bobby Convey scored for the under-20 Americans off a pass from 14-year-old Freddy Adu.
SWIMMING: World fly mark falls
American-born Milorad Cavic of Serbia broke the world 100-meter butterfly record at the European Short Course Championships in Dublin, Ireland. Cavic's time of 50.02 seconds was 0.08 faster than the mark set by Germany's Thomas Rupprath in January 2002.
FIGURE SKATING: Plushenko leads
Despite a rare fall, world champion Evgeni Plushenko won the short program at the Grand Prix finals in Colorado Springs, Colo. Helped greatly by the new points judging system being used in this series, Plushenko overcame a hard crash to lead Emanuel Sandhu, a late replacement for Tim Goebel. The free skate is tonight.
WSF SUIT: The World Skating Federation, organized this year to challenge the International Skating Union as the sport's governing body, filed a lawsuit over "anti-competitive conduct" by the ISU. The suit was filed in U.S. District Court in New York.
