It was a night that will remain a milestone in Hillsborough County history and an achievement that will stay with Armwood's players and coaches for the rest of their lives.
On Dec. 11, 2003, the Hawks defeated Lake Gibson 29-21 to win the Class 4A state championship.
Armwood became the first county team to win a state title since 1969, the first to go 15-0 and the first to have three players rush for more than 1,000 yards (Kalvin Bailey, Jameel Williams and Demetrius McCray).
Sean Callahan, an assistant when the school opened in 1984 and coach since 1990, set three goals before the season: become district champions, finish the regular season 10-0 and win a state title.
The Hawks seemed unstoppable from the beginning. They averaged 50 points during the regular season and were ranked No. 1 in the state.
In the end, they accomplished all three goals and then some.
