Gulfport election has only 1 race

No local races will be on the March ballot for Indian Shores voters, just the presidential primary.

GULFPORT - There will be an election here in March, but voters will have only one race to consider.

Council member Harry Broadhead will face Bob Worthington for the Ward 3 seat. Broadhead, who is serving his first term on the council, runs his own handyman service. Worthington is a retired Honeywell engineering aide and a former Gulfport volunteer fire captain.

All residents can vote in the at-large election.

Two incumbents were re-elected without opposition: Michael Yakes, who will begin his seventh term as mayor; and Council member John "Ted" Phillips, who has served on the council since 1990.

The voters in Indian Shores can still visit the polls in March to cast ballots for the presidential primary. But for the third year in a row, the town will not have an election.

No one challenged Council members Joan Herndon and Bill Smith. Each will serve a three-year term.

Qualifying periods end Monday in Belleair Shore and Redington Beach. And on Friday, Belleair Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, North Redington Beach and Redington Shores will close their qualifying periods.

Interested persons have until Dec. 30 to qualify for elections in Madeira Beach, St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island and South Pasadena.

All elections will be on March 9.
