Traffic engineers look at need for signals

By RON MATUS and ELISABETH DYER
Published December 19, 2003

WEST SHORE BOULEVARD - City traffic engineers should know in a few weeks whether traffic signals are needed at two West Shore Boulevard intersections: at Estrella Street and at Beach Way Drive.

The city installed traffic-counting devices at those locations last week. Because of a malfunction, the city will reactivate the devices near the Beach Way intersection within two weeks.

Once the results are in, engineers will look at traffic numbers and other data, such as the number of accidents, and determine whether signals are warranted.

In recent months, the city has also analyzed two other West Shore intersections.

The one at S Dundee Boulevard/Lumb Avenue did not need a signal, traffic engineers decided. The one at Fair Oaks Avenue did.

Installation of the Fair Oaks signal is expected in spring 2005.

Run for a Cure racks up more than $35,000

HISTORIC YBOR - Last month's Richard's Run for a Cure at Centennial Park in Ybor City raised more than $35,000 for the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute.

The 5K race drew more than 800 runners and walkers. This year's official starter was 6-year-old Mark Desmarais, a Tampa boy who has cancer.

Richard Gonzmart, president of Columbia Restaurant, organized the fundraiser for the second year in memory of his father, who died in 1992 from pancreatic cancer.
