Zephyrhills ends yet another Pasco win streak

The Bulldogs' 2-0 victory snaps the Pirates' four-game win streak.

DADE CITY - There is something about Pasco that always seems to bring out the best in Zephyrhills.

Too bad the feeling isn't mutual.

Zephyrhills beat Pasco 2-0 in a Sunshine Athletic Conference game Thursday at W.F. Edwards Stadium, ending the Pirates' four-game win streak and sweeping the season series with two shutouts.

Two of Pasco's three losses this season have been to Zephyrhills, which ended the Pirates' season-opening two-game win streak, too, with a 1-0 victory.

"It's always been that way," Bulldogs coach Janet Heyman said. "Last year in our district semifinal, we ended up losing to them on penalty kicks, so it's always emotional. Pasco and Zephyrhills always end up playing their best games."

But not this season. In both nondistrict games, the attack of Pasco (8-3-1, 2-2 SAC) has suffered without leading scorer Jamie Pass. In the first game, she was with the band at the football playoff game. Thursday, the senior 25-goal scorer left in the sixth minute with a sprained right ankle and did not return.

"She's definitely an offensive playmaker for them," Heyman said. "She definitely is a threat to any team on offense."

There was no trouble with the finesse attack of Zephyrhills (5-5-1, 5-4-1 SAC), however, as senior forward Terra Rosenweig scored two deft goals.

With 19 minutes left in the first half, she took a cross from Hillary Tunker and headed it in at the near post. With seven minutes left in the game, Rosenweig took a middle cross from Nicole Johnson and lifted it over the keeper's head for her sixth goal of the season.

Superb possessions by Allie Beasman in the middle helped stifle Pasco's already struggling offense and give Zephyrhills its third shutout of the season.

Pirates goalkeeper Victoria Schrader recorded 13 saves while Pasco's limited opportunities did not come to fruition. Kaci Wubbena and Rosalba Velasquez had two shots, missing their best chances in the last minute of the first half and final minutes of the second.

"It's conference. Let's hope we can keep the winning streak in the district," Pirates coach Wardell Powell said. "I don't know why, but we don't seem to be able to match them."

Heyman wanted a strong start to the second half of the season for her team, and so far, at 1-1-0, she has it.

"I told the girls I want improvement from them in the second half of the season," Heyman said. "So that's what we're trying to work on right now."
