Editor: This week I held the inaugural meeting of my Veterans' Advisory Board. The board, comprised of more than 120 area veterans, was formed to help me learn more about the needs and opinions of this area's veterans on current issues and pending legislation in Washington.
The constructive thoughts and suggestions of the many men and women who attended are much appreciated. The two-hour meeting fostered what I believe to be a positive discussion about recent successes and upcoming challenges this area will face in the veterans' arena in the months and years ahead.
The concerns addressed at the meeting will receive my swift attention, and I extend my thanks to those in attendance for the kind words they had for my staff.
It is my hope that throughout my tenure in office, I can continue to keep this open dialogue with all residents of the 5th Congressional District. Working together, we can indeed produce meaningful change for the better.
Re: Brown-Waite votes show she follows party line despite claims, promises, Dec. 14 letter to the editor:
Editor: I'm sick of reading false reports about how Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite voted to cut combat pay for members of our military. Nothing could be further from the truth when you consider that she voted to increase both combat pay and base pay for our men and women in uniform. Additionally, she supported the All-American Tax Relief Act of 2003, a measure to reduce taxes for our troops.
I know most of these false claims are appearing in letters to the editor and not in actual St. Petersburg Times stories, but come on! As a major newspaper you bear some responsibility when something false appears in your paper.
The Hernando Times welcomes letters from readers for publication.
