SOUTHLAND SALE: Shawn Johnson is looking forward to a belated Christmas present Jan. 2 when he closes the sale of Southland Lanes with current owners Rocco and J.R. Sarley.
"Hopefully, no snags will come along and we'll have a final deal on that day," said Johnson, owner of BowlUSA, a supply and pro shop business.
Johnson, the son of the late Mike Cullen, would not reveal a purchase price.
BowlUSA, located in Clearwater, first was Bowlers Warehouse then Cullen Bowling Supply before Johnson took over and renamed the business.
In 1986, Southland Lanes was built by Sarley adjacent to the family's skating rink on 66th Street North in Pinellas Park. The Sarleys have leased the rink but own the property and bowling center.
BRAZEAU'S WINS: Brazeau's Pro Shop of Ocala won the 11th American Bowling Congress/b.line World Team Challenge Grand Championship at The Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas.
Brazeau's rolled 189 and 247 to defeat Cherokee Lanes of Canton, Ga., 436-388 in the Baker scoring-system title match. In a semifinal, Brazeau's rallied with games of 214 and 249 to beat Sunset Lanes/Ebonite of Henderson, Nev., 463-439.
Ben Hoefs, Jace Peterson and John Socha, from Wisconsin; and Orlando's Dennis Rakauskas teamed with Brian Brazeau for the victory. Brazeau's, which paid an entry fee to compete, earned $12,000.
The squad finished third in the Seminole Lanes regional in February.
Kegel Training Center, winner of the September stop at Seminole, was 12th in Las Vegas. Sign Producers, winners in February, placed 15th.
