SUNRISE - Marcus Nilson's second goal of the season came at a perfect time. He had a short-handed goal in the second period, and Roberto Luongo had 36 saves to lead the Panthers to a 1-0 victory over Dallas on Friday night.

"Our line's been playing well, so I've had a lot of chances," Nilson said. "It was just a matter of time as far as me scoring. It feels good, but most of all, we pulled the win off."

Florida won for just the second time in 11 games (2-3-5-1).

Dallas had its three-game winning streak snapped and its road woes extended. The Stars are 3-12-2 in away games, matching their total for road losses during the 2002-03 season. Dallas is winless in its past six away from home.

Dallas goalie Marty Turco finished with 23 saves and allowed fewer than three goals for the 11th time in 13 games.

Luongo, who entered having faced the most shots of any goalie in the league, recorded his second shutout of the season.

His best save came in the final moments of the second, when Brenden Morrow stood in the crease and tipped Don Sweeney's slap shot from the boards. Luongo reached back and swiped away the rolling puck.

Dallas also had a good scoring chance a minute earlier when Bill Guerin's shot from a sharp angle went between Luongo's legs and bounced off the post.

Nilson scored when he flipped a soft shot over the diving Turco.

RED WINGS 3, BLACKHAWKS 2: Brendan Shanahan had the tiebreaker goal in the second period, and Manny Legace had 28 saves to lead Detroit.

Ray Whitney, returning from a groin injury, and Nicklas Lidstrom also scored for the Red Wings, who won their eighth straight at home and improved to 10-1-1-1 in their past 13.

Brett McLean and Burke Henry scored for Chicago, which dropped to 0-10-0-1 in its past 11 road games and slipped to 1-12-3-3 in its past 19 overall.

DEVILS 5, SABRES 2: Brian Gionta had two goals and an assist, and Martin Brodeur had 31 saves to lift New Jersey.

John Madden added a goal and an assist, and Jeff Friesen and Sergei Brylin also scored for the Devils, who have won six of eight (6-1-1).

The defeat extended the Sabres losing streak to seven games, tying a franchise record, and they have lost five straight at home.

FLAMES 2, BLUE JACKETS 1: Matthew Lombardi scored short-handed and Mikka Kiprusoff stopped 34 shots and survived 13 power plays to lead visiting Calgary.

The Blue Jackets set a franchise record for power plays and failed to score on any of them.

Martin Gelinas also scored for the Flames, who are unbeaten in five games (4-0-1-0) and have won three straight.

Rick Nash got his league-leading 20th goal for the Blue Jackets, who have lost their past four (0-2-0-2) and are winless in seven (0-4-1-2).

MAPLE LEAFS 2, CAPITALS 2: Visiting Toronto extended its franchise-record points streak to 13.

Goalies Trevor Kidd and Olaf Kolzig were stellar in the second half, allowing no goals over the final 33 minutes despite solid scoring chances at both ends.

Toronto's Kidd had 25 saves in just his second game of the season in place of Ed Belfour, and Kolzig overcame his recent struggles to make 32 stops after two-game rest.

Dainius Zubrus, at 11:46 of the second, completed the scoring.

CANADIENS: Forward Benoit Gratton was recalled from AHL Hamilton.

FLYERS: Associated Press reported center Mike Comrie agreed on a one-year contract. Terms weren't given.

THRASHERS: Dan Snyder's No. 14 was retired by the OHL's Owen Sound Attack before its game against the Saginaw Spirit. Snyder died Oct. 5 of head injuries in a car accident with Atlanta teammate Dany Heatley.

WILD: Defenseman Brad Brown was placed on injured reserve with a broken right wrist, and defenseman Erik Reitz was recalled AHL Houston.
