LARGO - The Young-Rainey STAR Center has received a $2-million grant from the Department of Energy to assist with upgrading the former government plant. It began converting eight years ago into a high-tech civilian industrial and research center.
Part of the grant will be used to repair the main building's roof, said Paul Sacco, STAR Center administrator. The repairs will complete the first phase of a plan to replace the entire roof, he said.
The money also will be used to renovate some office space in an effort to attract new tenants. The center currently has 22 tenants and has had as many as 26, Sacco said.
For more than 30 years, the 96-acre center was a government plant for the production of nuclear weapons components. It was sold in 1995 to the Pinellas County Industry Council. Raytheon Systems is the anchor tenant.
