Preps

Coach of the year

By EMILY NIPPS
Published December 22, 2003

Intense, tough and driven, Melanie Humenansky knew what she was working with when she finalized Bayshore Christian's starting lineup: a group of very young girls. With a lot of the Faith Warriors' talent residing with the youngest players, including an eighth-grader and three freshmen, the ninth-year coach did her best.

She molded their strengths into a 30-2 record and Class A state championship. Humenansky, who also won a state title in 1998, was voted Class A Coach of the Year by the Florida Dairy Farmers.

The Ballast Point Elementary teacher is expecting to return all but the Faith Warriors' one senior (Katie Mitcham) next season.

Can you say "repeat"?
