Toe stop aids Rangers' 4-2 win over Bruins

NEW YORK - Somehow Mike Dunham kept Patrice Bergeron from putting the tying goal into the Rangers' net.

Bobby Holik and Petr Nedved each scored twice, but it was Dunham's key stop in the final minute that preserved the Rangers' 4-2 victory Monday night over the Bruins.

Holik's empty-net goal at 19:14 of the third period sealed the victory. Just before, Dunham made a lunging toe stop to deny Bergeron's attempt at the tying goal. Bergeron fired at a seemingly open net from the slot.

"I'm not sure if it was my toe or the outside of my pad," Dunham said. "It hit some part in that area. I was lucky."

The Rangers improved to 8-5-2-2 at home and 3-3 in their last six overall.

Boston has just one win in 10 games and two in the last 15.

"Our go-to guys seem to be having trouble finding the back of the net right now," Bruins coach Mike Sullivan said. "We had some great opportunities to score."

RED WINGS 2, BLUES 1: Host Detroit snapped St. Louis' nine-game unbeaten streak (7-0-2) on Ray Whitney's tiebreaking goal with 5:15 remaining.

Pavel Datsyuk scored the other Detroit goal and assisted on Whitney's winner. Curtis Joseph made 24 saves, including several in the final minute.

After Datsyuk forced Alexander Khavanov into turning the puck over to Brett Hull behind the St. Louis net, Hull found Whitney in front. Whitney then put a shot past Chris Osgood.

SENATORS 3, PANTHERS 2 (OT): Todd White scored at 1:34 of overtime to lead host Ottawa to its third straight victory. Daniel Alfredsson took advantage of a turnover at the Panthers blue line to send White in alone on goaltender Roberto Luongo. White deked Luongo before sliding the puck in.

Valeri Bure scored twice and Luongo stopped 42 shots for Florida, which lost for the first time in three games and just the second time in seven. Bure's second goal gave Florida a 2-1 lead in the second, but a little more than a minute later, Martin Havlat converted Marian Hossa's pass to tie it.

CANUCKS 4, KINGS 4: Jarkko Ruutu scored with 3:54 left to complete host Vancouver's comeback from a three-goal deficit. Ruutu, who ended a 26-game goal drought in his previous game, scored his third of the season by driving hard to the crease and shoving the puck and Kings goalie Cristobal Huet into the net.

COYOTES 3, PREDATORS 3: Shane Doan scored the tying goal in the third period and had two assists as visiting Phoenix salvaged the tie. It was the 14th goal for Doan, who has 10 points in seven games, and spoiled Scott Walker's three-goal performance, the second hat trick of his career. Phoenix extended its winless skid to five.

STARS 3, HURRICANES 1: Jere Lehtinen had two goals and an assist to lead Dallas, which hadn't won at Carolina since their first meeting on Jan. 3, 1998.

CANADIENS 4, PENGUINS 1: Saku Koivu and Sheldon Souray had a goal and an assist apiece, and Jose Theodore made 16 saves to lead host Montreal, which has just four losses in its last 15 games (8-4-3). Tomas Surovy scored for Pittsburgh, last in the East and winless in three (0-2-0-1).

FLYERS: Enforcer Donald Brashear faces charges of driving under the influence, careless driving and refusing to take a Breathalyzer test after his arrest Friday in Waterford Township, N.J. He is scheduled to appear in municipal court Jan. 8. Waterford Police Chief John Bekisz told the Courier Post of Cherry Hill (N.J.) Brashear was stopped about 3 a.m. after police saw him pull his pickup out of a shopping center parking lot and begin swerving.

THRASHERS: All-Star right wing Dany Heatley, who hasn't played this season because of injuries in a Sept. 29 car accident that killed teammate Dan Snyder, will resume skating today. The team also said Heatley will speak to the media before Friday night's home game against Tampa Bay. He hasn't spoken to reporters since the crash.
