Xpress, the Coolest Section of the St. Petersburg Times, is the home for features, news and views of interest to young readers. Most of the work in Xpress, which appears on Mondays in Floridian, is produced by the Times' X-Team. The team of journalists ages 9-17 from around the Tampa Bay area is selected every year at the end of the school year to serve during the following school term. The current team of 12 was chosen out of 150 applicants. Watch for X-Team application forms in Xpress during the month of May.

Xpressions: Dreams and imagination soar

In this month's open theme, students dream of reaching the high notes like Louis Armstrong; dream of not being judged; or just dream. And when asked to write "I Am From" poems, students come from white sparkles falling from the sky; from letters, words and pages; and from pepperoni, gooey cheese and fresh fruit. If you would like to see your work on these pages, see the directions below.

Xpressions, our monthly showcase for the art, writing and photography of students through the 12th grade, is looking for your work! Xpressions appears the last Monday of each month inside Floridian.

Please read the following instructions before submitting your work, which must be based on the designated themes.

JANUARY: YOUR FAVORITE PLACE - It could be your grandmother's kitchen, the beach at sunset or maybe even your own back yard. Describe in words, art or photography a place that has special meaning for you. Deadline: Postmark Jan. 9.

FEBRUARY: OPEN THEME - Send us your creative work (art, words or photography) depicting the topic of your choice. Deadline: Postmark Feb. 4.

MARCH: SILENCE - Using one, some or all of your five senses, portray what silence means to you in art, words or photography. Deadline: Postmark March 3.

APRIL: OPEN THEME - Send us your creative work (art, words or photography) depicting the topic of your choice. Deadline: Postmark April 7.

MAY: YOUR MOST PRIZED POSSESSION - It could be a family heirloom, the first tooth that you lost or a home run ball. In art, words or photography tell what makes it so special to you. Please, no pets or people. Deadline: Postmark May 5.

JUNE: OPEN THEME - Send us your creative work (art, words or photography) depicting the topic of your choice. Deadline: Postmark June 2.

Artwork must be on white, unlined paper, with the medium stated on the back (oil, pastel, crayon, etc.). Be sure to include your name, age, name of school and grade, your address, ZIP code, phone number with area code and your e-mail address. Your work will not be considered without all of this information.

IMPORTANT: Stories must be no longer than 150 words. We will return only artwork and only if you indicate that you want it back.
