ST. PETERSBURG - The Seminole and Boca Ciega girls teams set up an all-Pinellas County final Monday at the Hooters Holiday Shootout. Neither trailed at the Bayfront Center. Seminole beat Lakeland Santa Fe 62-57 and Boca Ciega cruised by Lakeland Kathleen 55-12.
The backcourt of Chelse Patterson and Alli Fogle led the Warhawks attack. The duo combined for 37 of Seminole's 62 points. Patterson's 19 points were second to Kim White's 22. The talented Santa Fe guard repeatedly penetrated to the basket for easy layups.
Santa Fe senior Kaley Berg paced the Raiders early, scoring nine of her 11 in the first quarter before Seminole coach Dave Swanson made some defensive adjustments.
"We started making her go to her right side," Swanson said.
The left-handed Berg did not score again until midway through the final quarter.
Seminole's deliberate post offense led to 17 more free-throw attempts than Santa Fe, which got to the line eight times.
In the second game, Boca Ciega scored 36 straight and led 40-5 at halftime. The Red Devils had no answer for Boca Ciega's full court pressure. They needed almost two quarters to score their first basket.
"We went with four guards so we could be really aggressive and get some breaks," Boca Ciega coach William White said.
The Pirates only allowed five field goals and Kathleen to 18 percent shooting.
Seminole faces Boca Ciega, its Class 5A, District 10 rival, for the tournament championship at 6 tonight.
