MILLER, MARY MARTHA, 80, of Inverness, died Friday (Jan. 3, 2003) in Orlando. Born in Atlanta, she came here 31 years ago from Miami. She was a former telephone operator for Southern Bell, a member of First Baptist Church of Inverness and Fellowship Sunday school class, and a volunteer for Hospice of Citrus County. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Miller, Inverness, and Toni Houck, Orlando; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Hooper Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inverness.
SHORTREED, LAURENCE W., 63, of Inverness, died Thursday (Jan. 2, 2003) in Inverness. Born in Rahway, N.J., he came here in 1989 from Moncks Corner, S.C. He was a certified master technician with 17 years of service for General Motor. He enjoyed gardening, cars and fishing. He was Methodist. Survivors include his wife, Barbara; a son, Laurence Jr., Moncks Corner; three daughters, Beverly Hankins, Donna Shortreed and Lori Johnson, all of Inverness; two brothers, Stuart, Summervile, S.C., and Donald, Point Pleasant, N.J.; a sister, Constance Robbins, Floral City; and three grandchildren. WELCH, ROBERT C., 79, of Beverly Hills, died Thursday (Jan. 2, 2003) in Lecanto. Born in Pittsburg, he came here in 1988 from Volant, Pa. He was a safety engineer for an insurance company and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of VFW, Washingtonville, Ohio, and was Protestant. Survivors include a son, Robert A., Coupesville, Wash.; two daughters, Sandra Isabella, Newcastle, Pa., and Linda Welsch, Columbus, Ga.; and a grandson. DAIBER, BILLIE A., 79, of Spring Hill, died Friday (Jan. 3, 2003) at home. Born in Lyndhurst, Ohio, she came here in 1987 from Ohio. She was a homemaker and an active member of First United Methodist Church. GRAY, MICHAEL S, 33, of Spring Hill, died Thursday (Jan. 2, 2003) at Spring Hill Regional Hospital. Born in Worchester, Mass., he came here a year ago from West Palm Beach. Survivors include his wife, Micheline; a son, Ian, Spring Hill; his mother, Debra Gray; and two brothers, Shane and Ryan, and a sister, Kelly Casey, all of Chipley. HANKA, WILLIAM J. SR., 89, of Port Richey, died Wednesday (Jan. 1, 2003) in Port Richey. Born in Pittsburg, he came here 16 years ago from Lower Burrell, Pa. He was an agent for Century 21, Lower Burrell, and a member of Lions Club, New Kensington First United Methodist Church, and First United Methodist Church of Hudson. Survivors include two sons, William Jr., Hudson, and Dennis, East Liverpool, Ohio; a daughter, Esther Gourley, Lower Burrell; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. JASTREBSKI, ELIZABETH S., 76, of Masaryktown, died Friday (Jan. 3, 2003) at Tampa General Hospital. She came here 50 years ago from her native Creighton, Pa. She was a retired accounting clerk for Community Hospital of New Port Richey and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, where she was choir director and received the first St. Jude Award and the 1985 Dr. Frist Humanitarian Award. Survivors include a daughter, Adrienne St. Clair, Masaryktown; a brother, Stephen Surmik, Tucson, Ariz.; and three sisters, Irene Surmik, Creighton, Stephanie Connolly, Pennsylvania, and Sylvia Bellinotti, Marion, Ind. MAJIROS, ROBERT R., 65, of Spring Hill, died Friday (Jan. 3, 2003) at Hernando-Pasco Care Center, Brooksville. Born in Shenandoah, Pa., he came here five years ago from Fort Pierce. He was a retired air traffic control specialist for the FAA, an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, and after retirement, became a horticulturalist for several local nurseries. He was Catholic. PETERSON, LORRAINE K., 77, of Spring Hill, died Friday (Jan. 3, 2003) at home. Born in Queens, N.Y., she came here 17 years ago from Long Island, N.Y. She was a retired switchboard operator with 17 years of service for Lindenhurst Public School System and a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Survivors include a daughter, Debra Chernis, Spring Hill; five sons, Joseph, Hartford, Wis., David, Orlando, Paul, Long Island, Andrew, Spring Hill, and Mark, Long Island; a sister, Joan Wright, Spring Hill; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. RAMOS, WILLIAM F., 84, of Spring Hill, died Thursday (Jan. 2, 2003) at Brooksville Regional Hospital. Born in Philadelphia, he came here in 1984 from Landsdale, Pa. He was a wireman for ITE Electrical Systems and an Army veteran of World War II, earning an Oak Leaf Cluster, a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star Medal, and a European African Middle Eastern Service Medal. WILLS, CAROL A., 63, of Spring Hill, died Friday (Jan. 3, 2003) at Spring Hill Regional Hospital. Formerly a resident of McHenry, Ill., she moved to Florida in 1995 and then came here five years ago. CAMERON, DAVID CLARK, 67, of Sun City Center, died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2002). Born in Berlin, N.H., he moved to the Tampa Bay area in 1991. He was a 1961 graduate of Plymouth State College and spent 25 years as an educator before retiring. Survivors include his wife, Ann Bryan Cameron; a son, Bryan Cameron, Nashua, N.H.; a daughter, Lynn Bouchard, Concord, N.H.; two grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy Keough, New York. GRADY, ELISA JIMENEZ, 84, of Riverview, died Friday (Jan. 3, 2003). Born in Manati, Colombia, she moved to the area in 2001 from Jersey City, N.J. She was a records clerk. HAILEY, SYLVIA MEARS, 82, of Lakeland and formerly of Tampa, died Wednesday (Jan. 1, 2003) at Good Shepherd Hospice of Grace Health Care, Lakeland. Born in Tampa, she moved to Lakeland in 1959. She was Episcopalian. She was a member of the OES, Mystic Chapter 110 and Daughters of the Nile Temple. HUMPHREY, RICHARD W. "BILL," 68, of Tampa, died Thursday (Jan. 2, 2003) at the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital. Born in Louisville, Ky., he moved to the Tampa Bay area in 1987 from Gainesville. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He worked as a health care maintenance engineer until his retirement. He was Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Trillis; three daughters, Fran Farmer, Land O'Lakes, Leslie Sansoni, Tampa, and Terri Humphrey, Lutz; a son, Richard E. KANIZAI, WILLIAM "BILL," 79, of Ruskin, died Monday (Dec. 30, 2002) at South Bay Hospital, Sun City Center. Born in Flint, Mich., he moved to the Tampa area from Gladwin, Mich. more than 25 years ago. He worked with General Motors in Flint, for 32 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 839th Battalion and served during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Jean M. Kanizai, Sun City Center; four sons, Michael Dickens, Burton, Mich., Thomas Dickens, San Antonio, Texas, Dennis Kanizai, Savannah, Tenn., and Kenneth Kanizai, Ruskin; a sister, Irene Beebe, Otisville, Mich.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. ROBERTS, BENJAMIN P. "BEN" JR., 82, of Oldsmar, died Wednesday (Jan. 1, 2003). Born in Marine City, Mich., he came here in 1963 from Royal Oak, Mich. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps and U.S. Navy veteran. He owned Northgate Chrysler Plymouth, Tampa, and Ernie Haire Volkswagen-Mazda, Lakeland. He was Catholic, a member of the Knights of Colubus, 32nd degree Scottish Rite, and Hillsborough Masonic Lodge 25. He was also jester of the Egypt Temple Shrine. ABNER, DANNY FRED, 35, of Hudson, died Saturday (Dec. 28, 2002) in Bayonet Point. Born in Oneida, Ky., he came here 22 years ago from Beattyville, Ky. He was an air conditioning technician and Pentecostal. AUBREY, GILBERT JR., 82, of Carrabelle, formerly of Holiday, died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2002) at home. Born in Philadelphia, he moved to Holiday 24 years ago and moved to Carrabelle in 2002. He was a retired Supervisor of Transportation and Distribution for Philadelphia Electric Co., an Army veteran of World War II and Protestant. He was a member of Harry A. Houseman Lodge 717, F & AM, Philadelphia, Scottish Rite Valley of Allentown, Pa., Egypt Temple Shrine, Tampa, and Morell Smith American Legion Post, Newtown, Pa. BOUCHER, JOHN E., 67, of Hudson, died Wednesday (Jan. 1, 2003) at North Bay Hospital, New Port Richey. Born in North Adams, Mass., he came here in 1991 from Pownell, Vt. He was a retired certified meat cutter with 25 years of service for A & P Supermarkets, a Navy veteran and a member of VFW 06180, Port Richey. FORTNER, HELEN V., 86, of Hudson, died Wednesday (Jan. 1, 2003) at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. She came here in 1936 from her native Marlton, N.J. She was a retired seamstress and a member of First Baptist Church of Hudson. Survivors include two sons, Frank, Brooksville, and Harry, Hudson; three daughters, Lettie Bratcher and Mary Docter, both of Hudson, and Dolores Sanchez, Holiday; a brother, Russel Bareford, Seven Springs; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He worked for 20 years as a property appraiser at Cole, Layer, Trumbell Co., and also worked for 20 years at Frigidaire, both in Dayton, Ohio. He was a former restaurant owner in Brandt, Ohio. - WILSON, JEAN W., 79, of Clearwater, died Friday (Jan. 3, 2003) at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. She was born in East Orange, N.J., and came here 30 years ago from Mountain Lakes, N.J. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Chapel by the Sea, Clearwater, and Clearwater Yacht Club and transcribed books into Braille for the local blind community. Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Stewart, Clearwater; a son, John R. She was a graduate of Catholic University, Washington, D.C., and worked as an administrative secretary to Sen. and President Harry S. Truman in Washington, D.C. Her memberships included St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Largo, Pinellas Park Arts Society, National League of American Pen Women and St. Matthew's Young at Heart Club. - WARE, SHIRLEY JANET BROWN, 70, of Largo, died Friday (Jan. 3, 2003). She was born in Iowa. She was a registered nurse in Iowa and Florida and worked at St. Anthony's and Palms of Pasadena hospitals. She graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Iowa City, Iowa. She was a 30-year member of Seminole Methodist Church, where she was active in the ladies' church circle. She was a 50-year member of Order of the Eastern Star Bethlehem Chapter 169, a member of Beta Sigma Phi and received the Order of the Rose. She was a leader for the Girl Scouts, den leader for Pack 341 and a committee member of Boy Scout Troop 340. Survivors include her husband, Philip S. - KELLY, THOMAS F., 93, of Palm Harbor, died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2002) at Mease Dunedin Hospital. He was born in Clonegal, Ireland, and came here in 1991 from Chula Vista, Calif. He was a public transportation bus driver of Grey & Tan, New York City. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Michael J. Cicero American Legion Post 173, Holiday, and life member of VFW Post 2111, Chula Vista, Calif. - HAMPTON, WILLIE E. SR., 82, of Safety Harbor died Sunday (Dec. 29, 2002) at home. He came here in 1959 from his native Jackson, Miss. He was a brick mason for George Hunt. - WIERZBICKI, JOSEPH CHARLES SR., 85, of Greensboro, Ga., formerly of Tarpon Springs, died Thursday (Jan. 2, 2003). Born in Hamtramck, Mich., he came here in 1982 and moved to Greensboro in 2002. He retired after 20 years as office manager at New Haven Foundry. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving for eight years in the European Theater and leaving the service with the rank of chief quarter master. He was a member of Amvets. He was a military policeman in the Army during World War II. - HERR, MICHAEL DAVID "MIKE," 55, of Redington Shores, died Wednesday (Jan. 1, 2003) at the VA Medical Center at Bay Pines under the care of hospice. Born in Akron, Ohio, he came here in 1983 from North Canton, Ohio. He served as an air traffic controller in the Navy during the Vietnam War and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He later was an air traffic controller, a state certified pool operator for condos, hotels and motels, and a driver for Key Mark, a school fundraising business in St. Petersburg. Survivors include his wife, Patricia A.
