CALDWELL, JACK LOCKHART, 82, of Homosassa, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2003) at home under the care of his family and Hospice of Citrus County. Born in Wellington, Kan., he came here in 1981 from Orlando. He was a retired orthotist/prothetist for J.E. Hanger Inc. with 25 years of service. He was the owner of Jack L. Caldwell Inc. in Orlando for seven years. He attended Carson-Newman College in Tennessee, University of California, New York University and Northwestern University. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Swartzel Blue Lodge Lutz, Scottish Rite Orlando and York Rite Tampa. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Homosassa. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Alma (Hamblin); two sons, Frank Lockhart, Homosassa, and Jack Desmond, Port Wentworth, Ga.; a sister, Leona Baker, Knoxville, Tenn.; three half-sisters, Jonita Tennyson, Judy Putman and Loa Brown, all of Texas; two half-brothers, Bennie and Archie Lockhart, both of Texas; a niece; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. DeLAP, SARAH G., 90, of Inverness, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2003) at Citrus Health Center of Inverness. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she came to Florida in 1972 from Bayshore, N.Y. She was employed in domestic jobs and attended the Inverness Church of God. Survivors include her daughter, Alaine Varsano, Morristown, N.J.; a grandchild, Ronen Varsano; and caregivers, Harvey and Astrid Dunn, Floral City. Chas. E. HENDERSON, LYNDER J. "SLIM," 89, of Beverly Hills, formerly of Spring Hill, died Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2003) at Woodland Terrace in Hernando. Born in Pilot Oak, Ky., he came here four years ago from Spring Hill. He retired from the Ford Motor Co. in Michigan. He was an accomplished musician playing the fiddle and steel guitar with Eddie Arnold. He was a Jehovah's Witness. Survivors include his wife, Patricia; two stepsons, Chris Anderson, Gallatin, Tenn., and Harry Anderson, Beverly Hills; and three nephews. Merritt Funeral Home, Brooksville.
HOLDEN, HENRY G., 82, of Lecanto, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2003) in Inverness. Born in Forest Hills, Mass., he came here in 1980 from St. Petersburg. He was the co-owner of Embree Marine Service, St. Petersburg. He was a talented boat builder and woodcrafter. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Cadrain; a son, Keith, Lecanto; a daughter, Kathleen Godard, Palm Harbor; a brother, Arthur, St. Petersburg; a sister, Doris, Thonotosassa; and two granddaughters. NISSEN, DONALD D., 81, of Hernando, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2003) at Citrus Memorial Hospital, Inverness. Born in Souix City, Iowa, he came here eight years ago Michigan. He was a retired machine operator for an appliance business, and was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific. He was a life member of VFW Post 4252. Survivors include his wife, Marie; a stepson, Norman Nequist, Franklin, Tenn.; two brothers, James, Yuma, Ariz., and Richard, Marshall, N.C.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. PARKER, RUTH M., 93, of Dunnellon, died Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2003) at home. Born in Jellico, Tenn., she came here in 1984 from Miami. Survivors include her son, William H., La Belle; two daughters, Betty Sanders and Frances Mills, both of Dunnellon; two sisters, Mavis Gibson, Jacksboro, Tenn., and Clara Hipple, Miamisburg, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. SAMS, MARY ANN, 56, of Inverness, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2003) at H. Lee Moffit Cancer Center, Tampa. Born in the Panama Canal Zone, she came to St. Petersburg in 1959, then moved to Inverness. She was a secretary for GTE Directories, St. Petersburg. She was a 1964 graduate of Dixie Hollins High School, St. Petersburg, and volunteered at the Historical Society Citrus County. She was Protestant. Survivors include her husband of 20 years, Russell; a son, Robert Pic, Brandon; a daughter, Debbie Jackson, Seminole; three stepsons and a stepdaughter; a brother, Winchell Pennock, Portland, Ore.; and nine grandchildren. SMITH, ROBERT EDWARD SR., 75, of Lecanto, died Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2003) in Crystal River. Born in McCleansboro, Ill., he came here in 2000 from Dearborn Heights, Mich. He was a civil engineer and appraiser, and a graduate of the University of Missouri. He was a veteran of World War II and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Crystal River. He was a member of American Legion and the Citrus Shrine Club. He was a 50-year member of the Walpole Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Emma Lou Gholson; a son, Robert E. SOGGS, MYRTICE GILLAM, 76, of Hernando, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2003) at home under the care of her family and Hospice of Citrus County. Born in Andalusia, Ala., she came here in 1982 from Billings, Mont. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church of Inverness. Survivors include two sisters, Tiny Bingham, Hernando, and Frances Humer, Warner Robins, Ga.; a brother, Charles K. Straughn, Homosassa; and many nieces and nephews. STORMS, J. WAYNE, 82, of Inverness, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2003) at home. Born in Hartford City, Ind., he came to Florida in 1988 from Trenton, Mich. He was a retired education administrator, having served as business manager and assistant superintendent for the Dearborn and Trenton public school systems in Michigan. He was an Army veteran of World War II and attended the First Presbyterian Church of Inverness. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Maxine Reed; a son, Stephen W., Flowery Branch, Ga.; a daughter, Susan Dodds, Gainesville, Ga.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Chas. E. WALDRON, MICHAEL M., 52, of Lecanto, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2003) at home. Born in Bangor, Maine, he moved to St. Petersburg in 1975 and resided there for 22 years. He later moved to Lecanto. He was an Air Force veteran, serving three tours of duty in Vietnam. He achieved the rank of E5 sergeant. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Coast Guard Auxiliary, NAM-VET, U.S. Pistol Shooters Association, H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group) and Blues Society of St. Petersburg. HARRINGTON, IRWIN R., 78, of Spring Hill, died Saturday (Jan. 4, 2003) at Oak Hill Hospital, Spring Hill. He came here 49 years ago from his native Hope Valley, R.I. He was a retired farmer and played organ music at various civic organizations including the Elks, Lions and Knights of Columbus. He was Methodist. Survivors include his wife, Beatrice; a son, Gary, Brooksville; a sister, Christine Burns, West Warwick, R.I.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. JUNKINS, GEORGE, 90, of Brooksville, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2003) at Hernando-Pasco Hospice, Brooksville. Born in Boston, he came here recently from Fort Lauderdale. He was captain for private yachts and was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge and First Baptist Church of Brooksville. Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Pail, Brooksville, and Judy Goodhue, Neceda, Wis.; a sister, Florence Seamen, Bath, Maine; four granddaughters; and 12 great-grandchildren. KRAMER, JOHN G., 86, of Spring Hill, died Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2003) at home. Born in Boston, he came here 20 years ago from Wilmette, Ill. He was a retired furniture salesman and a graduate of Tufts University. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and was a member of Knights of Columbus and St. Theresa Catholic Church. LEINEN, PETER M., 72, of Spring Hill, died Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2003) at Oak Hill Hospital, Spring Hill. STEINBERGER, ALFRED, 72, of Spring Hill, died Monday (Jan. 6, 2003) at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. TESTINO, MARGARET E., 78, of Brooksville, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2003) at Oak Hill Hospital, Spring Hill. Born in Farmingdale, N.Y., she came here 14 years ago from Islip, N.Y. She was a retired nurse for the New York State Hospital. Survivors include her son, Robert, Brooksville; two sisters, Ruth Salerno and Joan Hopke, both of Riverhaven, N.Y.; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren. CROW, JOSEPHINE ANN JOHNSTON "JOAN," of Tampa, died Monday (Jan. 6, 2003). Born in Franklin, N.C., she was a lifelong resident of the Tampa area. She was a graduate of Plant High School and Florida State College for Women. She was a volunteer at the Henry B. Plant Museum, a member of the Founder's Garden Circle and the Junior League of Tampa. He was a retired U.S. Postal Service letter carrier with 20 years on the job. He was a Navy Reserve veteran, a 50-year member of the Eagles and past president. JACOBSEN, ALICE M., 91, of Safety Harbor, formerly of Dunedin and New Port Richey, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003) at home. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., came to New Port Richey in 1989, moved to Dunedin in 1997, and moved to Safety Harbor in 2000. She was a homemaker. Survivors include a son, John, Safety Harbor; a brother, Thomas Brady, Carmel, N.Y.; three grandchildren, John P. LaFREDO, EVELYN, 94, of Clearwater, formerly of New Port Richey, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2003) at Integrated Health Services, Clearwater. She moved to Clearwater from her native Olean, N.Y., moved to New Port Richey in 1971, and returned to Clearwater in 1994. She was a retired registered nurse for Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater, with more than 13 years of service, and for St. Francis Hospital, Olean. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, New Port Richey. Survivors include her son, James V. SCHMITT, NOREEN T., 95, of Simsbury, Conn., formerly of New Port Richey, died Sunday (Jan. 5, 2003) in Simsbury. Born in County Galway, Ireland, she lived in New Port Richey for 23 years. She was a hairdresser for Lit Brothers, Philadelphia. She was a member of the Simbury Theater Guild, Senior Intonations Singing Group and St. Mary Catholic Church. He was an electrician and a member of IBEW Local 103. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, was a member of Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 1107 and Sea Pines Boat Club, and was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus. - D'LOUHY, RICHARD J., 84, of Tarpon Springs, formerly of Largo, died Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2003) at home. He was born in Bridgeport, Conn., grew up in Stratford, Conn., came to Largo in 1968 from Fayetteville, N.Y., and moved in 1991 to Tarpon Springs. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served aboard the USS Custer. He worked as an advertising and sales promotion specialist for Columbia Records, Remington Rand and General Electric and locally represented several area advertising and printing businesses. He was a member of Curlew United Methodist Church of Palm Harbor, and was a former member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Largo, and the First United Methodist Church of Tarpon Springs. He was an avid letter writer and a classic car enthusiast. He graduated from the University of Florida and Emory School of Dentistry. He belonged to Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, Xi Psi Phi and Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national honorary dental fraternity. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving in the Naval Dental Corps, and was a Naval Reserve commander. He opened a dental office in 1947 and retired in 1984. He was chairman of the advisory committee to the St. Petersburg Junior College School of Dental Hygiene. He was a past president of the Pinellas County Dental Society. - FOLEY, JAMES PAUL, 82, of Seminole, died Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2003) at home under hospice care. Born in Roanoke, Va., he came here in 1971. He served 30 years in the Air Force and was a flight engineer, supporting the Apollo 12 mission in Australia and working with NASA on the Mercury mission while stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked 15 years for the VA Medical Center at Bay Pines and volunteered there another 15 years. He was a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association, Blue Dolphin Chapter 527 and DAV Chapter 93 in Seminole and the Korean War Veterans Association. He was a committee member for the Veterans Affairs Volunteer Service at Bay Pines and presented the Eagle Scout award to Boy Scouts nationwide. He also was a keynote speaker at Veterans Day ceremonies.
