Born in Beech Creek, Pa., she moved to Ocala in 1979, and then came here in 1999. She was a member of Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ramy, Pa.   • ATTERBERRY, HARRY McALPHINE, 83, of Tampa, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003) at Town & Country Hospital. Born in Eunice, La., he moved to the Tampa area in 1965 from Metairie, La. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the 156th Infantry and the Louisiana National Guard. He was a first lieutenant in Company A 12th infantry. He was also part of the invasion force to land at Normandy Beach on D-Day and was awarded the bronze star for bravery in 1944. He was a member of the Catholic Church of the Incarnation. He was on the Hillsborough/Tampa Knighthood Degree, and was named Knight of the Year for the 8612 Council. He was a fourth-degree Knight and member of American Legion Post 152. Survivors include two daughters, Susan Huff, Tallahassee, and Brenda Atterberry, Tampa; a brother, W.T. Atterberry, West Monroe, La.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.   • SPRINGSTON, ORLEN EUGENE "GENE," 85, Tampa, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2003) He was a resident of the area for 45 years. He was a U.S. Army corporal who was awarded the Purple Heart during World War II and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include his wife, Frances (Vera) Springston; two daughters, Bonnie DeNegre and Connie Strohaker; two brothers, Robert and Herbert; a sister, Kathleen Rust; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.   • VANNES, ANTOINETTE "TONI" MOTIFF, 64, of Tampa, died Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2003) at home. She was a native of Green Bay, Wisconsin., and resident of Tampa since 1994. She was a graduate of Bellin College of Nursing, Class of 1959, in Green Bayand graduated summa cum laude from the University of Maryland with a bachelor's degree in Nursing. Prior to her retirement from the nursing profession in 1993, she was the Assistant Director of Nursing at Fairfax Nursing Center, Fairfax, Virginia. She was the past president of the Carrollwood Area Women's Club, an active member of FACTors, the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center support group, and a member of St. Paul Catholic Church. She was a registered nurse, homemaker, active in the formation of Hernando-Pasco Hospice, and Catholic.   • ALMOND, PHILIP C., 79, of Zephyrhills, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2003) in Zephyrhills. Born in Russellville, Ark., he came here eight years ago from Conroe, Texas. He retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in California. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving under General George S. Patton. He later served at Heargbreak Ridge in the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW Post 8154 and was Protestant. Survivors include his wife, Alice; three daughters, Eileen Pregeant, Spring, Texas, Nancy H.   • BLOCHER, CHARLES E., of Jacksonville, formerly of Port Richey, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2003) at Orange Park Medical Center. Born in Meyersdale, Pa., he came to Florida in 1972 from Confluence, Pa. He was an elementary school principal for Turkeyfoot Valley School District. He was an Army veteran of World War II and member VFW and American Legion. He was a member of King of Kings Lutheran Church of Port Richey. He worked for General Motors in Research and Development, involved in designing the first turbine engines, and was instrumental on NASA First Man Space Capsule, and Director and Designer for Edward Weck Medical Instruments. He was an avid pilot and a member of a hydroplane racing team for Garwood. He was a retired advertising account executive and a World War II Navy veteran. He was Jewish. He worked as a heavy-equipment mechanic for Golden Triangle. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Elks Lodge 2159 and American Legion Post 7, both in Clearwater. He loved dancing, playing cards and music, especially Mario Lanza. He was an engineer and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, St. Petersburg, and the Experimental Aircraft Association.     • HARWOOD, JOHN J., 80, of Clearwater, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003) at Morton Plant Hospital. He was born in Somerville, Mass., and came here in 1988 from Minneapolis. He retired after more than 19 years of Navy service and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He later worked for Minnegasco in Minneapolis. He was a Mason and a volunteer for the Clearwater Police Department.     • HOFFMAN, GLEN E., 81, of Clearwater, died Monday (Jan. 6, 2003) at Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater. He was born in Milwaukee, and came here in 1969 from France. He was a retired chief warrant officer with 30 years of service in the Air Force. He served as a pilot during World War II and the Korean War and was a member of the 27th Fighter Bomber Group Association. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Delores Ann; a son, Glen A., Warrensburg, Mo.; three daughters, Susan Stinson, St. Petersburg, Nancy Truluck, Bradenton, and Lynn Jones, Indian Rocks Beach; a son, Michael Hoffman, Largo; a sister, Carol Bertelson, Edina, Minn.; and eight grandchildren.     • BEREMAN, RONALD E. "RON," 83, of Largo, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003) at home. He was born in Indianapolis and came here in 2001 from Fort Myers. He was a retired Army Air Forces major and veteran of World War II. He was an air traffic controller for more than 30 years, and retired as tower chief at Hilo International Airport, Hawaii. He received Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal with oak leaf clusters. He was a member of the 486th Bomber Group and the 43D Pilot Group, and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Largo. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Frances; three sons, Ronald E II, Boynton Beach, Ernest L., Ponca City, Okla, and Richard L., Huffman, Texas; two daughters, Shelley L. He worked in marble construction and was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Clearwater. He served in the Army during World War II and was a prisoner of war in North Africa. He was a life member of VFW Post 7234, Ocean View.     • McCOMMIE, LEROY S., 84, of Winslow, Maine, a winter resident of Kenneth City, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003) at home in Kenneth City. He was born in Waterville, Maine. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a retired carman of 40 years for the Maine Central Railroad. He enjoyed stamp collecting, pinochle and bowling. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary L.; two sons, Leroy S.     • AZZOLINA, ELIZABETH C., 82, of Pinellas Park, died Friday (Jan. 10, 2003) at Northside Hospital and Heart Institute. She came here in 1980 from her native Cleveland. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Thomas J.; two daughters, Mary Jane Geracci, Seminole, and Carolyn Ives, Largo; a sister, Jean Toth, Pierpont, Ohio; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.     • COOTS, STEVEN ALAN "STEVE," 47, of Phoenix, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Wednesday (Dec. 18, 2002) at home. Born in Aberdeen, Md., he came here in 1961. He was a Navy veteran. He graduated from St. Petersburg Junior College as an X-ray technician. He enjoyed traveling, skydiving and was a licensed pilot.     • COXON, DAVID ALLEN "TEXAS RANGER," 31, of St. Petersburg, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003) at Tampa General Hospital. Born in Santa Barbara, Calif., he came here in 2000 from Las Vegas. He attended Nina Harris Exceptional Student Education Center and graduated from Helen J. Stewart School in Las Vegas. She was a certified nursing assistant at Bayfront Medical Center, retiring in 2000 after 31 years. She ws a member of Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the trustee and usher boards. Survivors include three sons, Kenneth, Stanley and Reginald, two daughters, Sandra Jordan and Valerie Jordan; two brothers, William Jordan Jr., Dawson, Ga., and Earl Jordan, Fort Lauderdale; three sisters, Mary Davis, St. Petersburg, Louise Cooper, Dawson, Ga., and Doris Brown, Cincinnati; and five grandchildren.     • SCHROEPPEL, GERALD B., 81, of Brooksville, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003) at Oak Hill Hospital, Spring Hill. Born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, he moved to Brooksville in 1999 from St. Petersburg. He was an Air Force veteran and served 32 years. He achieved the rank of senior master sergeant and served in World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and DAV. He was a member of Nativity Lutheran Church in Weeki Wachee. Survivors include his wife, Freda; two sons, Richard, Franklin, Ohio, and Mark, Alachua; three daughters, Teri Schroeppel, Issaquah, Wash.; Lisa Clements, Renton, Wash.; and Venessa Lay, Miamisburg, Ohio; a brother, Les, Ivins, Utah; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.     • SUAREZ, ISAAC RUBY, 79, of St. Petersburg, died Friday (Jan. 10, 2003) at home. Born in Americus, Ga., she came here in 1994 from Bronx, N.Y. She was an occupational therapist at Manhattan State Hospital in New York. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, the Women's League and the Senior Club. Survivors include her husband of nine years, Cleve Sr.; a stepson, Charles Suarez, New York; a daughter, Carole Gulston, Queens, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Regine Whitlow, Cambria Heights, N.Y.; and four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.     • WALDRON, MICHAEL M. "AFTER MIDNIGHT DIGGER," 52, of Lecanto, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Wednesday (Jan. 8, 2003) at home. Born in Bangor, Maine, he moved to St. Petersburg in 1975 and resided here for 22 years before moving to Lecanto. He was an Air Force veteran, serving three tours of duty in Vietnam. He achieved the rank of E5 sergeant. He was a blues harmonica and bass guitar player. He was a member of the DAV, Coast Guard Auxiliary, NAM-VET, U.S. Pistol Shooters Association, Harley Owners Group and Blues Society of St. Petersburg.     • PHILLIPS, JAMES N., 85, of Seminole, died Monday (Jan. 6, 2003) at Sun Coast Hospital, Largo. Born in Mulberry, he came here in 1971 from Clearwater. He was a public utilities supervisor for the city of Clearwater for 30 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Christian Church of Largo and a member of Mason Lodge 127 in Clearwater. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Evelyn M.; a son, James E., Cincinnati; a daughter, Carol L.     • GRONEK, BENEDICT T. "BEN," 87, of South Pasadena, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003) at Palms of Pasadena Hospital, South Pasadena. He came here in 1972 from his native Chicago. He worked for the Veterans Administration, where he worked for the rating board as an occupational adjudicator. He was an Army Air Forces captain during World War II. He was a member of Mensa and was a French wine collector and enthusiast. Survivors include a daughter, Dianne Meltreger, Park Ridge, Ill.; and a brother, Leo Gronek, Chicago. E.     • KARAYIANES, FRANK, 59, of South Pasadena, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003) at Mease Hospital, Dunedin after a brief illness. Born in Lyn, Mass., he came here in 1995 from Ashland, Mass., where he retired from the Ashland Fire Department as chief. He was a Navy veteran and a member of the Greek Orthodox Church. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Mary; two sons, Frank Jr., Seattle, and Michael, South Pasadena; a daughter, Annmarie, Orlando; a sister, Andrea Newhall, Middleton, Mass.; and three grandchildren.
