  • HANNA, GEORGE RAYMOND, 79, of Inverness, formerly of Crystal River, died Saturday (Jan. 11, 2003) at Citrus Memorial Hospital. Born in Blauvelt, N. Y., he came here 23 years ago from Royal Oak, Mich. He was a retired Quality Control Specialist for General Motors and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of VFW Post 8189, Homosassa and St. Benedict Parish. Survivors include a son, John, Hopatcong, N.J.; three daughters, Ruth Hass, Hardwick Township, N.J., Eileen Westveer, Columbia, Mo., and Carol Green, McCool Junction, Neb.; two brothers, Charles Hanna, Blairstown, N.J., and Richard, Port Orange; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.   • MOORE, EVANGELINE M., 81, of Inverness, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003) at Avante at Inverness. Born in Barran County, Mich., she came here in 2000 from Ontario, Canada.   • SCOFIELD, PHILIP G. JR., 56, of Inverness, formerly of Tampa, died Saturday (Jan. 11, 2003) at Citrus Memorial Hospital, Inverness. Born in Louisvile, Ky., he came here in 1994 from Tampa. He was a respiratory therapist for various hospitals, an Air Force veteran of Vietnam, and Catholic.   • WITT, RICHARD, 80, of Crystal River, died Friday (Jan. 10, 2003) at home under the care of family and hospice. Born in West Palm Beach, he was a seasonal resident here since 1959 and became a permanent resident in 1970. He was a retired builder, an Air Force veteran, and a prisoner of war in Germany.   • CHILD, ROBERT DANA, 79, of Spring Hill, died Friday (Jan. 10, 2003) at Oak Hill Hospital, Brooksville. Born in Boston, he came here 18 years ago from Boontown, N.J. He was a retired sales manager in the automotive industry, an Army veteran of World War II, a volunteer for Stage West Community Playhouse, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Catholic. Survivors include his wife, Madeline; two daughters, Barbara Everest, Spring Hill, and Patricia Twardosky, Brooksville; a sister, Dorothy Brheney , West Palm Beach; and two grandchildren.   • HURST, RICHARD I., 65, of Brooksville, formerly of Tampa, died Friday (Jan. 10, 2003) at home. He came here in 1985 from his native, Tampa. He was a marine electrician and a Navy veteran of the Korean War. She was a retired nurse for the Huntington School District, N.Y., an avid bowler, and a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she was active in church affairs.   • NICOLLE, EDGAR F., Sr., 76, of Tampa, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003). He was born in Baton Rouge, La., and had lived in Tampa for 41 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a graduate of the University of Tampa. He retired as a lieutenant with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and was a 25-year member of the Fellowship Lodge No. 265 F&AM. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Joyce H. Nicolle; three children, Edgar F. Nicolle, Jr., Sharon N. Smith and Frances N. Jackson; two sisters; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.   • PARRINO, JENNIE (GIOVANNINA) DEMMI, 91, of Tampa, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003). She was an accomplished seamstress and cigar maker in Tampa. She was born in Tampa and moved to Fort Myers in 1948 with her husband, where they opened Dunbar Heights Variety Store, which they operated until 1975. In April 2002, she moved back to Tampa. Survivors include her husband, Peter; two daughters, Mary Frances Menendez and Elaine Macaluso; a brother, Joe Demmi; three grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.   • ROCHE, LOUISA MARY, 89, of Tampa, died Friday (Jan. 10, 2003). She was born in Avonmouth, England and had lived in Tampa since 1948.   • WITTNER, HARVEY GOLDMAN, 77, of Tampa, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003). He was a Tampa native, a member of Hillsborough High School's class of 1942 and a graduate of the Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He practiced optometry in the Tampa Bay area for more than 54 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II with the 158th Regimental Combat Team (Bushmasters), fighting in the Philippines (Luzon and Leyte) and earning the Combat Infantryman's Badge and two battle stars. He also received the Bronze Star in later years. He continued his military career as an officer in the Army Reserve and retired as a full bird colonel in 1980. His last military assignment was as commandant of the 3388th USAR School. He was a member of Civitan International for 53 years, served on the Downtown Civitan Club's initiation team, and was charter president of the North Tampa Civitan Club. He belonged to Congregation Rodeph Sholom for 77 years, and was also a member of Kol Ami. He was an amateur radio operator and a volunteer optometrist for many years with the Judeo-Christian Coalition Clinic, and most recently was involved with the Lake Strawberry restoration project. He was a member of the Hillsborough Society of Optometrists. He was a pilot for many years. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; three sons, Jay, Fred and Jon; two daughters, Nancy and Katherine; a brother, Ted; a sister, Betty Tribble; and two granddaughters.   • CAGLE, CLIFFORD OLIVER, 62, of Bradenton, formerly of Dade City, died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2002) at Blake Medical Center. Born in Troy, Mich., he moved to Bradenton from Dade City in 1989. He was an electrical engineer at Tropicana, a Navy veteran of Vietnam, and Methodist.     • CLARK, FRANK B., 77, of Clearwater, died Saturday (Jan. 11, 2003) at Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and came here in 1998 from Concord, Calif. He worked as a concierge at Carnegie House in New York City and was a gourmet cook. He was a member of Light of Christ Catholic Church, Clearwater. He was an avid bowler and deepwater fisherman. Survivors include three daughters, Suzanne M. Cugini and Denise A. Clark, both of Clearwater, and Karen A.     • COTTRELL, NINA RUTH, 75, of Clearwater, died Friday (Jan. 10, 2003) at Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater, of complications from cardiac surgery. She was born in Evanston, Ill., and came here in 1949 from Montgomery, Ala. She earned an associate's degree in arts in 1947 from Stephens College, Columbia, Mo., and graduated in 1949 with a bachelor's degree from Huntington College, Montgomery. She was a teacher at Mildred Helms Elementary School and Belleair Elementary School, and then was a teacher and director at both First Christian Church School and Dunedin Day School. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Clearwater, where she was a Sunday school director and served on the altar guild. She was a member of Clearwater Garden Club and the Bookworm Book Club. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Edward; a son, Edward, Boise, Idaho; a daughter, Vivian DeRussy, South Pasadena; a brother, Frank L.     • GILLESPIE, EARL H., 81, of Clearwater, died Sunday (Jan. 12, 2003) at Integrated Health Services of Clearwater. He was born in Glen White, W. Va., and came here in 1967 from South Charleston, W. Va. He retired as an insurance salesman for Metropolitan Life Insurance. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Church of God, Safety Harbor. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Charlotte Mildred; two sons, Earl R., Largo, and Randall H., Hollywood, S.C.; a daughter, Rebekah L. Gillespie, Dunedin; a brother, Luther, Millington, Tenn.; two sisters, Naomi Word, Farmville, Va., and Margaret Stevens, Charlottesville, Va.; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson.     • MEIER, VICTOR O., of Clearwater, died Friday (Jan. 10, 2003) at Manor Care Dunedin nursing home. He was born in Ormsby, Minn. He came here in 1961 from Minnesota, where he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in electrical engineering. He retired as a certified professional logistician at Honeywell and earlier had retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel after 28 years in the Air Force. He served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II and as an Air Force electronics officer during the Korean War. After retiring from Honeywell, he worked as a stockbroker specializing in tax-free bonds. He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Clearwater, where he served on the board of trustees and was a founder of the church's radio ministry. He was a longtime volunteer with the Aid Association of Lutherans and the Lutheran Brotherhood. He and his wife were Lamplighter Coaches for several area branches. He was a member of the Air Force Association, Honeywell Minneregs, the Honeywell Retirees and the University of Minnesota Alumni Association. Survivors include his wife, Jeanette "Jan;" a son, Mark, and a daughter, Nancy Dixon, both of Clearwater; a brother, Lorenz, Ormsby, Minn.; and a sister, Verna Hoelmer, Trimont, Minn.     • ASLANIAN, HELEN, 74, of Largo, died Friday (Jan. 10, 2003) at Largo Medical Center. She was born in New York City and came here in 2002 from New York. She was a homemaker and a trip coordinator for the Cold Spring, N.Y., Senior Citizens Group. She was Catholic. Survivors include two sons, Carl, Seminole, Ala., and William, White Plains, N.Y.; a daughter, Joanne Ochoa, Beacon, N.Y.; a brother, Donald, McKeon, Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.     • BURNS, JOSHUA C., 22, of Largo, died Thursday (Jan. 9, 2003) at the home of an uncle in Largo. He was born in Dayton, Ohio, and came here in 1999 from St. Charles, Mo. He was a member of Hope Community Church of St. Petersburg. Survivors include his mother, Shelia Burns, and two brothers, Shon and Jason Duff, all of Largo; and his father, Edward, St. Charles.     • COLEMAN, EMILY R., 99, of Ocean Grove, N.J., and a winter resident of Largo, died Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2003) at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. She was born in Newark, N.J., and was a longtime former resident of Montclair, N.J. She was a social services worker and for 40 years worked for the Volunteers of America. She held the offices of secretary/treasurer to the board of directors, secretary to the National executive Board, National Field & Financial Secretary and secretary/treasurer to the Officer's Retirement Fund Trustees. In 1968 she was asked to represent the organization when Pres. L.B. Johnson signed an omnibus housing bill for low and moderate income families, for which the group had lobbied. She was an ordained minister, a charter member of the National Association of Social Workers, a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers and a member of the President's Committee for the Handicapped.     • COUTURE, DORIS J. (CAUCHON), 67, of Salem, N.H., and a winter resident of Largo, died Saturday (Jan. 11, 2003) at the Catholic Medical Center, Manchester, N.H.     • SMOTHERS, EARL LAYMON, 95, of Largo, died Friday (Jan. 10, 2003) at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. He was born in Kalamazoo, Mich., and was a winter resident here since 1970, when he retired as a machinist for Borg Warner in Kalamazoo. He previously worked as an attendant at the Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital, for Bryant Paper Mill, Kalamazoo, and for Eaton Manufacturing in Battle Creek, Mich. In 1980, he moved permanently to Teakwood Village in Largo. He was an avid fisherman on the inland lakes of Michigan. He traveled frequently throughout the country, and to Hawaii and Europe.     • BANKS, DONALD SR., 66, of Seminole, died Friday (Jan. 10, 2003) at home. Born in Buffalo, N.Y., he came here in 1995. He was a 50-year member of the Electrical Workers Union, IBEW Local 41, and served on their executive board from 1972 to 1978. He coached swimming at Neuman High School for 19 years and later was head coach at St. Joseph's high School and Canisius College, all in the Buffalo area. He founded the Buffalo Catholic Swim League and was president of the Niagara District of USA Swimming. Survivors include his wife, Agnes (Attea); two daughters, Sandra Banks and Cheryl Marron; five sons, Donald Jr., Robert, Peter, Jeffery and Kenneth; and 13 grandchildren.
