  • BARRS, LOUIS WAYNE, 92, of Bushnell, formerly of Gulfport, died Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) at Citrus Memorial Hospital, Inverness. Born in Tampa, he came here 25 years ago from Gulfport. He was a retired cabinet maker for Tropicana Mobile Homes, St. Petersburg. He was Protestant. Survivors include two brothers, Mert Barrs, St. Petersburg, and George Barrs, Florida; a sister, Eve, Florida; and three nieces, Glenda Stuart, Inverness, Dorca Rader, Greenfield, Ind., and Donna McCawley, St. Petersburg.   • CLARK, WILLIAM JAY, 71, of Inglis, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) in Crystal River. Born in Athens, Pa., he came here in 1981 from St. Petersburg. He was a builder and an Army veteran. He was a member and past commander of VFW Post 8698 Inglis and a member of American Legion Post Dunnellon.   • GIRDWAIN, ALPHONSE F., 80, of Beverly Hills, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at the Crystal River Health Center. He came here 15 years ago from his native Chicago. He retired from the state of Illinois Highway Maintenance Department and was a World War II Army veteran who served in the 141st Infantry. He was a life member of the Inverness Moose Lodge and American Legion. He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church. Survivors include his daughter, Theresa Girdwain, Beverly Hills; a son, Robert, St. Charles, Ill.; a sister, Sophie Malas, Chicago; and three granddaughters. She was a retired administrative assistant and was a member of Weeki Wachee Quilting Club. She was an Episcopalian. Survivors include her husband, Jack; three sons, Jack D.   • LEIGHTON, JOHN E., 78, of Spring Hill, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. He was born in Portland, Maine. He was a graduate of Greeley Institute, Cumberland Center, Maine. He was a retired manager at the H.P. Hood and Sons Plant, Agawam, Mass. He served as a radio operator on a C-47 in the 79th Airborne Troop Carrier group during World War II. He was a longtime Mason, and was a member of United Church of Christ, Spring Hill. He was a lifelong resident and worked as a computer programmer for Pinellas County school system. He graduated from the University of South Florida and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Dunedin and the Sierra Club. Survivors include his mother, Grace M. He came here in 1995 from his native Pittsburgh, where he retired as a supervisor in the coding department of Clark Candy Co. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Dunedin, and the American Legion in Clearwater.     • TOWNSEND, WILLIS EDGAR "BILL," 53, of St. Petersburg, died Thursday (Jan. 30, 2003) at Edward White Hospital. Born in Grand Rapids, Mich., he came here in 1975 from Oklahoma. He was an electrician in construction. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church.     • WALSH, RUTH M., 81, of St. Petersburg, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at home. She came here in 1983 from Winthrop, Mass. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, and its Women's Club. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Survivors include a son, Lawrence A. Walsh, a daughter, Kathleen DeMarco, a brother, George Moynihan, a sister, Evelyn Carver, and five grandchildren, all of Winthrop.     • WITHERSPOON, JOHNNIE, 51, of St. Petersburg, died Sunday (Feb. 2, 2003) at home. He came here in 1957 from his native Marion, S.C. He was a saftey manager for BFI for 15 years and operated a cleaning service for the past two years. He was the former operator of Midtown Food Store and Hot Wings Food Service, both in St. Petersburg. He was an Army veteran with 15 years of service. Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Chong; two sons, Connel, Tampa, and Antonio, St. Petersburg; his stepmother, Isabella Witherspoon, four brothers, Wallie, David, Christopher and Keith, all of St. Petersburg; two sisters, Noa Chin and Tanya Witherspoon-Innissee, both of St. Petersburg; and two grandchildren.     • YOUNG, ELEANOR M., 90, of St. Petersburg, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at Westminster Shores Health Center. She was born in Haverhill, Mass., and came here in 1966 from Valhalla, N.Y. She graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music. A concert vocalist and pianist, she taught music in the public schools for several years in Newport, N.H. and Thornwood, N.Y. She was a member of Pass-a-Grille Beach Community Church, where she sang in the choir. Survivors include a sister, Carolyn Keith, Saco, Maine; and a niece, Judith Klement, St. Petersburg.
