BARRS, LOUIS WAYNE, 92, of Bushnell, formerly of Gulfport, died Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) at Citrus Memorial Hospital, Inverness. Born in Tampa, he came here 25 years ago from Gulfport. He was a retired cabinet maker for Tropicana Mobile Homes, St. Petersburg. He was Protestant. Survivors include two brothers, Mert Barrs, St. Petersburg, and George Barrs, Florida; a sister, Eve, Florida; and three nieces, Glenda Stuart, Inverness, Dorca Rader, Greenfield, Ind., and Donna McCawley, St. Petersburg. CLARK, WILLIAM JAY, 71, of Inglis, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) in Crystal River. Born in Athens, Pa., he came here in 1981 from St. Petersburg. He was a builder and an Army veteran. He was a member and past commander of VFW Post 8698 Inglis and a member of American Legion Post Dunnellon. GIRDWAIN, ALPHONSE F., 80, of Beverly Hills, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at the Crystal River Health Center. He came here 15 years ago from his native Chicago. He retired from the state of Illinois Highway Maintenance Department and was a World War II Army veteran who served in the 141st Infantry. He was a life member of the Inverness Moose Lodge and American Legion. He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church. Survivors include his daughter, Theresa Girdwain, Beverly Hills; a son, Robert, St. Charles, Ill.; a sister, Sophie Malas, Chicago; and three granddaughters. MAYETTE, KEITH R., 51, of Homosassa, died Sunday (Feb. 2, 2003) at Seven Rivers Community Hospital, Crystal River. Born in Massena, N.Y., he came here in 1994 from Dover Plaines, N.Y. and was a retired laborer. He was Catholic. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy E.; a stepdaughter, Theresa Spross, Stanfordville, N.Y.; three sisters, Nora, New York, Edna, Alabama, and Donna, Brooksville; a brother, Kenney, Brooksville; and two stepgrandchildren. MERCER, BARBARA LEE, 67, of Homosassa, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) in Lecanto. Born in Columbus, Ohio, she came here in 1968 from Lake Worth and was a homemaker. She was Methodist. PRATHER, CINDA E., 56, of Brooksville, died Sunday (Feb. 2, 2003) at Royal Oak Nursing Center in Dade City. Born in Monessen, Pa., she came here in 1980. She was Presbyterian. JONES, JOAN E., 76, of Spring Hill, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at Kindred Hospital Central, Tampa. Born in Passaic, N.J., she came here 13 years ago from Bloomsbury, N.J. She was a retired administrative assistant and was a member of Weeki Wachee Quilting Club. She was an Episcopalian. Survivors include her husband, Jack; three sons, Jack D. LEIGHTON, JOHN E., 78, of Spring Hill, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. He was born in Portland, Maine. He was a graduate of Greeley Institute, Cumberland Center, Maine. He was a retired manager at the H.P. Hood and Sons Plant, Agawam, Mass. He served as a radio operator on a C-47 in the 79th Airborne Troop Carrier group during World War II. He was a longtime Mason, and was a member of United Church of Christ, Spring Hill. Survivors include his wife, Jeannette; a daughter, Deborah Leighton, Auburn, Maine; a son, John, North Attleboro, Mass.; a brother, Frank, East Wenatchee, Wash.; several nieces and nephews; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. LEWIS, VERA J., 80, of Brooksville, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at Hernando-Pasco Hospice in Brooksville. Born in Eaton Rapids, Mich., she came here 20 years ago from Tennessee Ridge, Tenn. She was an airplane manufacturing factory worker and was a member of the Church of God. BUCHANAN, HELEN E., 82, of Tampa, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at University Community Hospital. A native and lifelong resident of Tampa, she was a salad chef at the Floridian Hotel and was Catholic. BERNICE ELZONE, 76, of Lake Panasoffkee, formerly of Tampa, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at Lake Eustis Care Center in Eustis. She was born in Florida and moved to Lake Panasoffkee in 1970 from Tampa. She was a retired motel manager and a homemaker. She was Baptist. CASELLA, JAMES J., 69, of Dover, died Friday (Jan. 31, 2003). Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he moved to the Tampa area in 1969 from New Jersey. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and a retired sales manager for Owens Corning Fiberglas. He was a member of Calvary Temple. MACPHERSON, WALLACE R. "MAC," 90, of Hudson, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at Hernando-Pasco Hospice, New Port Richey. Born in New York City, he came here in 1983 from Jackson, N.J. He was an oil truck driver. He was a volunteer firefighter in Long Branch, N.J., and a member of Elks Lodge 2284 New Port Richey and St. James Episcopal Church. He was a lifelong resident and worked as a computer programmer for Pinellas County school system. He graduated from the University of South Florida and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Dunedin and the Sierra Club. Survivors include his mother, Grace M. Clark, Dunedin; a brother, Paul L. Gibson, Inverness; two sisters, Frances Stearn, Broomfield, Colo., and Charlotte Colley Bennett, Woodville, Texas; and a caregiver, Anna Ryley. He came here in 1995 from his native Pittsburgh, where he retired as a supervisor in the coding department of Clark Candy Co. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Dunedin, and the American Legion in Clearwater. - FISHER, KENT E., 83, of Dunedin, died Wednesday (Jan. 15, 2003) at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. He was born in Ladysmith, Wis., first came to Dunedin as an infant, moved to Rhode Island as a young man, moved to Ellenton around 1988 and returned to Dunedin in 1992. He worked 30 years as a buyer for Armens Hardware, Providence, R.I. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. He was Christian, sang in the church choir and was an avid golfer. Survivors include his wife, Isabelle; a daughter, Carol Ryback, East Douglas, Mass.; a stepdaughter, Marsha Silverman, Los Angeles; two sons, James, Douglas, Mass., and John, Seminole; a stepson, Philip Gerzog, Dunedin; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. - CHATHAM, RUTH IRINE DOVER, 82, of Largo, died Thursday (Jan. 30, 2003) in Largo. She was born in Center Hill, moved to Orlando in 1956 and later moved to Largo. She was an electronics assembly worker. Survivors include three sisters, Ruth Stebleton, Martha Johnson and Ada Fletcher; and three brothers, Richard, Dan and Tom Padgett. He worked as a senior clinical systems engineer and worked 30 years with Beckman Coulter Inc. of Fullerton, Calif. He was Lutheran and enjoyed computers, fly fishing, scuba diving, hiking and sailing. - MORLEY, CARROLL A., 74, of Oldsmar, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at Hospice House Woodside, Pinellas Park. He was born in Fall River, Mass., and came here from Deal, N.J. He was a lawyer and graduated from Fordham University Law School, New York, where he won several track and field awards including a gold medal as anchor runner held in competition at the old Madison Square Garden, New York City. He was an Army veteran during the occupation of Japan and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He founded and was senior partner in the law firm of Morley, Cramer, Tansey, Haggerty and Fanning, Woodbridge, N.J. He was treasurer of the East Lake Woodlands Community Association and president and treasurer for St. Andrew's Condominium Association of East Lake Woodlands. He was a member for 15 years of East Lake Woodlands Country Clubs and formerly a member for 30 years of Deal Golf and Country Club.
