GEBERT, KATHERINE, 75, of Crystal River, died Thursday (Feb. 6, 2003) at home under the care of family and Hospice of Citrus County. Born in Paterson, N.J., she came here nine years ago from Margate. She was a retired Executive Director of Police and Firemen Pension Board, and was Lutheran. Survivors include her husband, Walter; a son, Walter Jr., Coral Springs; a daughter, Susan Pope, Jacksonville; a half-brother, Dinny Whelan, New Jersey; a half-sister, Adeline Bross, Dallas; and four grandchildren. LANGE, JOHANNE F., 96, of Homosassa, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) in Crystal River. Born in Saxon, Germany, he came here in 1971 from Sussex, N.Y. He was a laundry worker and Lutheran. MASON, CARSON, 73, of Crystal River, died Thursday (Feb. 6, 2003) at home. He was a lifelong resident of Crystal River. At the age of 14 he earned his captain's license and served as a guide on the waters of Crystal River. He was owner of WanderInn Restaurant, Crystal River, and was plant operator for the City of Crystal River Water Department until his retirement in 1992. He served one term as Crystal River, was a charter member of Seven Rivers Golf & Country Club and an avid golfer. Survivors include his wife, Dot; a daughter, Dorothy Leschot, Dunnedin; a brother, Gil Stoney, and an aunt, Betty Williams, Crystal River, both of Crystal River; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. STUART, PAUL DAVID, 90, of Dunnellon, died Sunday (Jan. 26, 2003) at Seven Rivers Community Hospital, Crystal River. He came here 75 years ago from his native, New York. He was a retired electrician and a Mason. Survivors include a step-son, Ralph Kraft, and a stepdaughter, Gloria Strei, both of California. National Cremation Society, New Port Richey.
SWAINSTON, KENNETH J., 46, of Homosassa, died Wednesday (Feb. 5, 2003) at home. Born in Byron Center, Mich., he came here 24 years ago from Clearwater. He was owner of Aqua-Tech Plumbing. Survivors include his wife, Lee Ann; a son, Troy, Homosassa; a daughter, Tara Auburn, Hollywood, Fl.; his mother, Virginia Swainston, Wyoming, Mich.; a brother, Dennis, Palm Harbor; three sisters, Penny Swainston and Pattie Abel, Wyoming, Mich., and Polly Swainston, Melbourne; and several nieces and nephews. WRENN, PHYLLIS E., 59, of Homosassa, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) at home. Born in Toledo, Ohio, she came here in 2000 from Atlanta. She was a retired executive secretary for John Hancock Insurance, a homemaker, and a member of Sugarmill Golf and Country Club and First United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband of nine years, Ed; a son, Tim Kuhlman, Wellington; two brothers, Rev. Duane Johnson, Granville, Ohio, and Rev. CHISHOLM, GWENDOLINE, 82, of Spring Hill, died Wednesday (Feb. 5, 2003) at Sterling House in Spring Hill. Born in Clarendon, Jamaica, she came here five years ago from Hollis, N.Y. She was a homemaker and member of Northcliffe Baptist Church. GAROFANO, JOHN SR., 84, of Spring Hill, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) at Bayonet Point Rehab Center. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he came here in 1973 from Queens, N.Y. He was retired from the New York City Fire Department and Withlacoochee River Electric and an Army veteran. He was a member of the Uniform Firefighters Association and St. Theresa Catholic Church. He enjoyed reading, writing, and taking care of his lawn. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Lee; three sons, John Jr., Larry, and Bobby, all of Spring Hill; a daughter, Marianne, Spring Hill; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. DONAHUE, BOB, 68, of Seffner, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) in Brandon. Born in Norwood, Mass., he later moved to the area. HINSON, VIRGINIA K., 70, of Tampa, died Friday (Feb. 4, 2003) at LifePath Hospice House, Sun City Center. She was the owner and founder of B and K Kitchen, later known as Kathleen's Kitchen. Born in Little Falls, Minn., she came here in 1967 from Waite Park, Minn. She attended Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, New Port Richey. WALKER, JOHN M. "BUD," 54, of Port Richey, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) at Morton Plant North Bay Hospital, Port Richey. Born in Manila, Philippines, he came here 16 years ago from Fort Myers. He was a construction superintendent for River Ridge Homes, developers of River Ridge subdivision, New Port Richey, and a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a 1976 Florida State University graduate and a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. - BEYAR, MARGARET M., 88, of Clearwater, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) at St. Mark Village, Palm Harbor. She was born in Bronx, N.Y., and came here in 1971 from Garden City, N.Y. She worked as a casting and fabrication bookkeeper for General Bronze, Garden City. She was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Clearwater, where she was a member of the Altar Guild. She and was president of the 9 Hole Golf League at On top of the World and enjoyed traveling. - WELCH, WILLIAM C., 75, of Inverness, formerly of Clearwater, died Thursday (Feb. 6, 2003) at Monroe Regional Medical Center, Ocala. Born in Urbana, Ill., he moved to Inverness four years ago from Clearwater. He was a handyman in the restaurant industry and a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the East Inverness Community Club and the Vineyard Church. - RILEY, MICHAEL PAUL, 76, of Dunedin, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) at Mease Dunedin Hospital. He came here in 1982 from his native Lowell, Mass., where he retired as a police officer. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers. He was a retired atomic engineer for Westinghouse, Tampa, for 17 years. He was born in Radisson, Wis., came to Tarpon Springs in 1949 from Exeland, Wis., and moved to St. Petersburg in 1979. He worked as a dairy foreman for Pansy-Bryan Dairy for 20 years and later for Salls Dairy in Tarpon Springs. He retired as grounds maintenance foreman for Paradise Shores in St. Petersburg after 13 years of service. He was a member of Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle in St. Petersburg and enjoyed camping, fishing and playing cards. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dolores; five daughters, Bernadine D. - BROWN, JAMES J., 75, of Tarpon Springs, died Wednesday (Feb. 5, 2003) at Hospice House Woodside, Pinellas Park. He was born in Chicago and came here in 1978 from Carol Stream, Ill. He was a retired estimator for a heating and plumbing company. He served in the Army and the Merchant Marines. He was Catholic and was a member of Knights of Columbus, Moose Lodge and Eagles and was an active volunteer at Green Dolphin Villas, Tarpon Springs, where he was news letter editor and chairman of crime watch. - WEYL, RUSSELL J., 56, of Savannah, Ga., formerly of Seminole, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) at St. Joseph's Hospital, Savannah. He was born in Chicago and lived here for several years. He retired from the Army after serving in the Vietnam War, where he received a Purple Heart and was member of the Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol and the 75th Ranger Battalion. He was Catholic and a referee. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Bobbie; a son, Jason, Savannah; his mother, Millie Wood, Las Vegas; his father and stepmother, Nelson and Peggy Weyl, Seminole; a brother, Phillip, Mililani, Hawaii; and a sister, Martha Singer, Seminole. - BEYER, ROBERT CARLYLE, 87, of the Mainlands, Pinellas Park, died Thursday (Feb. 6, 2003) at Bayfront Medical Center. Born in St. Paul, Minn., he came here in 1980 from Williamsburg, Va., where he retired as a history professor at the College of William and Mary after 16 years. He graduated summa cum laude in 1937 from Hamline University with a bachelor's degree and was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University, graduating with a master's degree in 1939. He earned a doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 1947. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War, advancing to the rank of lieutenant commander. He was a former member of committees for the selection of Rhodes scholars in Florida and Virginia. He was a member of the National Collegiate Honors Council, serving as president in 1973-74, and was a member of Who's Who in America from 1971 to 1981. He was a member of the Pinellas Park Art Society and the Gulf Coast Society of Scribes. He was a clerk in the Pinellas Park Public Library from 1989 to 1994. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Margaret Betterton; a daughter, Deelan Cato, Birmingham, Ala.; a son, Garrick "Jerry," California; and three grandchildren. - BENNETT, REGINALD CHARLES "REGGIE," 77, of London, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Thursday (Dec. 26, 2002) at home. Born in Bristol, England, he came here in 1955. He was a produce manager at Publix Super Markets and a veteran of the British submarine service. Survivors include his wife, Linn; a daughter, Christine Bennett, a son, David Bennett, and a grandson, Wally Joughin, all of St. Petersburg; and a sister, Jean Melmoth, Hawaii. - BICE, DONALD B., 78, of St. Petersburg, died Wednesday (Feb. 5, 2003) at home. Born in Gloversville, N.Y., he came here in 1977 from Utica, N.Y. He worked in communications for the St. Petersburg Police Department for five years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Palm Lake Christian Church in St. Petersburg, the Quarter Century Wireless Association, the Pelican Chapter, the Clearwater Gator Chapter, the Morse Telegraph Club of St. Petersburg, Antique Wireless Association and the Golden Triangle Model Yacht Club of St. Petersburg. - BOTHWELL, CAROLYNE, 61, of St. Petersburg, died Wednesday (Feb. 5, 2003) at Laurellwood Nursing Center. Born in Nazareth, Pa., she came here in 2001 from Chipley. She was a rehabilitation technician at the University of Washington for 21 years. She was an Army veteran and a member of AMVETS Post 8. She was Christian.
