Fox starts its season with solid broadcast
In every other sport, the announcing team has an entire season to work up to the championship, familiarizing itself with the ebb and flow for that dramatic conclusion. Not so for the Fox team of Mike Joy, Larry McReynolds and Darrell Waltrip, who Sunday tackled the biggest event of the year for NASCAR in their season-opening broadcast.

Newman avoids injury, field avoids Big One
DAYTONA BEACH -- The Daytona 500 is infamous for its perilous, multicar crashes. But on a day when heavy rains prompted two stoppages and cut the event nearly in half, just four cars were knocked out because of accidents, and no drivers were seriously injured.

Harvick had plenty of speed, not enough time
After starting at the back, he came forward quickly and was fourth when the race ended.

How the race unfolded
The 45th Daytona 500 started with two sets of teammates in the first two rows: Jeff Green was on the pole with Richard Childress Racing teammate Robby Gordon behind him, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. was on the outside of the front row with Dale Earnhardt Inc. teammate Michael Waltrip behind him. Rusty Wallace, who would have started eighth based on his result in Thursday's Twin 125s, started 38th because NASCAR found an illegal carburetor.

Outdoors
Daily fishing report

Recent weather has been a welcome relief after the cold fronts and chilly conditions. Fishing two days at 45-55 feet convinced us we still need to fish at 80-100 feet to find keeper grouper. Small reds and gags were aggressive and feeding on dead sardines and live pinfish, but we were able to catch only a few keepers. Sea bass and hundreds of gray snapper are keeping fishermen busy. Downsizing tackle and using squid was the best combination to get fish to bite.
