Arts&Entertainment: February 25, 2003 Side show
Sometimes it's better to evaluate awards show fashion and grooming after a cooling-off period. The initial revulsion of the moment can give way hours later to the realization that, for example, Lara Flynn Boyle's Golden Globes tutu was really brilliant social commentary. Most often, it doesn't. However, we'll take revulsion any time over how Sunday's Grammys left us: waiting for someone to snap us out of the slumber induced by the preponderance of Gap chic and the constant playing of Norah Jones' Don't Know Why.

Antiwar sentiment pervades film ceremonies
Film stars in Britain and France use the awards platform to make political statements.

In the news: Dixie Chicks will stop in Tampa
The Dixie Chicks, who scored three Grammy Awards on Sunday night, announced Monday that their new tour will bring them to the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa at 7:30 p.m. May 5, with special guest Joan Osborne. The U.S. tour starts May 1 in Greenville, S.C., and continues for nearly 60 arena dates before wrapping in Nashville in August. From there, the trio will tour Europe and Australia. Charge by phone at (813) 287-8844 or (727) 898-2100, or online at www.ticketmaster.com.

'Gypsy' strays too far from home
HUDSON -- You can understand directors and actors wanting to put their own signature on a classic role like Mama Rose in the musical Gypsy. After all, the show and the role of the pushy stage mom behind stripper/author/movie actor Gypsy Rose Lee was specifically written for the one-and-only Ethel Merman, and who wants to give the audience an impersonation of la Merman?
