  • COWAN, MARSHALL, 84, of Homosassa, died Friday (Feb. 21, 2003) in Crystal River. Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., he came here 23 years ago from Littleton, Colo. He was a retired vice president of sales management for industrial manufacturing. He was a captain in the Army Air Corps during World War II, having served with the 5th and 346th Fighter Squadrons. He was a charter member of the West Citrus Elks and a member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (Sherwood); two sons, Jim, Homosassa, and John, Richmond, Vt.; a daughter, Mary Beth Stanek, Peterborough, N.H.; a sister, Elizabeth Vitcha, Mentor, Ohio; and six grandchildren.   • HILL, BARBARA ELLEN, 63, of Inverness, died Sunday (Feb. 23, 2003) at home under the care of her family and Hospice of Citrus County. Born in Maxton, N.C., she came here in 1994 from Spartanburg, S.C. She was a homemaker, president of the Citrus County Foster Parents Association, and a member of Hernando United Methodist Church.   • KAUFMAN, ELMER JOHN, 82, of Homosassa, died Sunday (Feb. 23, 2003) in Lecanto. Born in Culbertson, Mont., he came here in 1989 from Leesburg. He was a pipe fitter. He was an Army veteran of World War II achieving the rank of staff sergeant and serving in Normandy, northern France and the Rhineland. He was awarded the Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a life member of the Homosassa DAV Post 139, and a member of VFW Post 9960 and Moose Lodge 1425. Born in Calhoun, Tenn., he moved to Brooksville six years ago from Tampa, where he resided for 30 years. He was employed in the construction industry. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.   • O'DELL, RITA A., 91, of Lecanto, died Saturday (Feb. 22, 2003) at Cypress Cove Care Center, Crystal River. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she came here four years ago from Ridge, N.Y. She was a communications operator for Brooklyn College with 30 years of service. She taught crafts for the Home Extension Course of Lindenhurst. She trained to dive with the Olympic team. She flew in early biplanes and flew regularly with her son out of Crystal River. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Wyandanch, N.Y. Fire Department. She was Catholic. She was a dental assistant, homemaker, salesperson, traveler, poet, animal lover, Brownie/Girl Scout Leader and volunteered for telephone reassurance calls for CARES Senior Center. He came to Florida in 1942 from his native Earlington, Ky. He was a private pilot and worked as a night auditor for Days Inn in Port Richey and Clearwater. He was an Army and Coast Guard veteran who served in World War II.     • BARRICK, RAY J., 67, of Clearwater, formerly of Gulfport, died Friday (Feb. 21, 2003) at Largo Medical Center under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. He was born in Newville, Pa., and came to this area in 1971 from Dillsburg, Pa., where he worked for Food Fair Stores for 17 years. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Locally he worked for Pantry Pride, Val Pak and Pasadena Baptist Church, where he was a member.     • ALESCIKAS, STEFANIJA, 96, of St. Petersburg, died Friday (Feb. 21, 2003) at Egret Cove Center. Born in Kaunas, Lithuania, she came here in 1976 from New York City. She was a seamstress in the clothing industry. She was a member of Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Gulfport, St. Casimir Mission, St. Pete Beach, and the American-Lithuanian Club.     • CONNOLLY, DR. CYNTHIA RUTH CATE, 43, of Nashville, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Friday (Feb. 21, 2003) at home after a six-year battle with breast cancer. She grew up in St. Petersburg. She graduated from Stetson University in DeLand with a degree in chemistry and briefly attended Baylor University in Houston. She was a restaurant inspector in Pinellas and Brevard counties before receiving a doctorate in physiology from Vanderbilt University. She was an assistant professor at Vanderbilt's molecular physiology and biophysics department and focused her diabetes research on carbohydrate metabolism during pregnancy. She was a member of Vine Street Christian Church, where she was a deacon and co-chair of the children's education department. She was a room mother at Overbrook School and was a former board member of the Middle Tennessee chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Survivors include her husband, Patrick; a daughter, Meaghan Connolly, and two sons, Brendan Connolly and Griffin Connolly, all of Nashville; her parents, the Rev.     • DURHAM, RONALD LEWIS JR., 17, of St. Petersburg, died Friday (Feb. 21, 2003) as the result of a shooting at Campbell Park Recreation Center. A St. Petersburg native, he attended St. Petersburg High School. He worked for Wendy's restaurant in South Pasadena and was a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church of Palmetto. He enjoyed weight training, boxing, basketball and writing poetry.     • FERGUSON, WILLIAM V. SR., 85, of St. Petersburg and Plymouth, Mass., died Saturday (Feb. 22, 2003) at St. Petersburg General Hospital. He was born in Worcester, Mass. He retired in 1981 as superintendent of heating for Worcester Public Schools. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater and participated in the invasion of Okinawa. He was a founding member of the Emerald Club, a past member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the Sons of Ancient Irish Kings and the Knights of Columbus and was a life member of the DAV. He was a member of the Pipe Fitters Union and the North American Martyr's Church. He was active in youth baseball. He enjoyed golf and cross county travel. Survivors include his wife, June E. (Conley); five sons, Gerald F., Auburn, Mass., Kevin W., Alexandria, Va., William V. Jr., Hilo, Hawaii, Brian M., Phoenix, and Timothy J., Charlton, Mass.; two daughters, Patricia A.     • JACKSON, HENRIETTA ROGERS "RITA," 89, of St. Petersburg, died Saturday (Feb. 22, 2003) at Arbor Oaks, St. Petersburg. Born in La Fayette, Ky., she came to Florida in 1952. She was a registered nurse at the VA Medical Center at Bay Pines and in Gainesville, where she retired. She served as a captain in the Army during World War II and the Korean War. She was a member of the Retired Officers Club, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, American Legion Post 14 in St. Petersburg, the Retired Army Nurse Corps Association and the Military Officers of World Wars. She was a member of Bay Pines Evangelical Lutheran Church in Seminole. Survivors include two sisters, Emily Cassels, Pompano Beach, and Evelyn Wingo, Clearwater; a brother, William Rogers, La Fayette; and a stepdaughter, Jeanne Winter, Richmond, Texas.     • McBEE, KENNETH ALLEN, 63, of Hawthorne, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Thursday (Feb. 20, 2003) at home. Born in Screven, Ga., he moved to St. Petersburg in 1989 and moved to Hawthorne in 1999. He was a marble and tile setter and worked on buildings such as the Pentagon and the Trump Tower. He was an Air Force veteran.     • OCONNOR, EVELYN B., 81, of St. Petersburg, died Saturday (Feb. 22, 2003) at Integrated Health Services of Pinellas Park. She came here in 1985 from her native Akron, Ohio, where she was a professional musician and played the bass and the piano at the Sanginiti Restaurant and Lounge in Akron for more than 15 years. Locally, she was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Jeremiah; a son, Jim Lindsey, Akron; three daughters, Barbara Nickleson, Pismo Beach, Calif., Merlyene Rutt, Silver Springs, and Sally Patrick, Louisville, Ky.; a sister, Frances Cross, Largo; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.     • POLLMAN, ANNA, 101, of St. Petersburg, died Wednesday (Feb. 19, 2003) at home. Born in New York City, she was a winter visitor since 1962. She was a grand jury reporter for the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Department of Justice, 2nd District, in New York City, from 1926 to 1931. In 1931, she was appointed from the civil service list as the first female official court reporter to the Supreme Court of New York and retired after 30 years.     • REGETS, PAUL P., 82, of St. Petersburg, died Monday (Feb. 24, 2003) at St. Anthony's Hospital. He was born in Riddlesburg, Pa., and came here in 1992 from Hollidaysburg, Pa. He was a union laborer with a construction company. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, was an Army veteran of World War II and received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Service Star. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Clara R.; three sons, John P. Steward, Edgemoor, S.C., Emmert I. Steward, Fort Mill, S.C., and Fredrick M. He moved here as a child in 1920 and was a winter visitor for most of his adult life, returning to live here in 1955 from Bedford, Pa. Locally, he owned Risser Oil Co. He moved to Lake City in 1981.
