BEARDSLEY, MARY, 78, of Hernando, died Wednesday (Feb. 26, 2003) in Inverness. Born in Evanston, Ill., she came here in 1976 from Illinois and was a licensed practical nurse. She was Methodist. Survivors include her husband of 19 years, Ernest A.; a son, Bruce Gordon, Tampa; a daughter, Debbie Dalton, Hickory, N.C.; five stepsons, Tim Beardsley, Phoenix, Ernest A. BERTSCHLER, PAULINE, 98, of Beverly Hills, died Thursday (Feb. 27, 2003) in Inverness. Born in Austria, she came here in 1980 from Queens, N.Y. She was a homemaker and a member of the German-American Club and Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Beverly Hills. Survivors include her daughter, Veronica Bont, Beverly Hills; a brother, Herman Allgauer, Austria; several nephews and nieces; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. CARNEY, EDNA M., 95, of Hernando, died Wednesday (Feb. 26, 2003) in Crystal River. Born in Northport, N.Y., she came here in 2000 from Great Barrington, Mass., and was a homemaker. She was Catholic. CLINE, LARK E., 80, of Crystal River, died Wednesday (Feb. 26, 2003) at Seven Rivers Community Hospital, Crystal River. Born in Clear Fork, W.Va., he came here 30 years ago from Chicago. He was a retired real estate broker and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a partner with Flora Veal Mcguire Real Estate in Crystal River. Survivors include his wife, Lucille; a son, Lark Cline Jr., Dunnellon; a daughter, Beverly Johnston, Lewisville, N.C.; a sister, Eileen Cline, Virginia; two grandchildren; and four great-grandsons. KLUSENS, JOSEPH F., 92, of Lecanto, died Wednesday (Feb. 26, 2003) in Lecanto. Born in Jenice, Poland, he came here in 1970 from Fairlawn, N.J. He was a retired marketer for Exxon Mobil Corp. (Standard Oil) with 45 years of service. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church of Beverly Hills. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Elizabeth; a sister, Helen Spiewak, Las Vegas; and two nephews, Clarence W. McQuillan, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Scot Spiewak, Prescott, Ariz. ROBERTSON, CHARLES B., 72, of Crystal River, died Thursday (Feb. 20, 2003) in Crystal River. Born in Cullman, Ala., he came here in 1990 from Tampa. He was a heavy equipment operator and supervisor, was a Korean War veteran and a member of American Legion Post 400. He was Baptist. Survivors include his son, Robert, Columbus, Ga.; a daughter, Connie Ann Robertson-Lemons, Monument, Colo.; a sister, Barbara Saylors, Arvada, Colo.; a grandchild; and three great-grandchildren. SLATTERY, THOMAS V., 85, of Homosassa, died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at home. Born in Long Island City, N.Y., he came here nine years ago from Long Island, N.Y. He was a construction industry plumber and was in the Naval Reserves. He was Catholic. She was a hotel chambermaid and a former member of West Shore Christ Church, Tampa. Survivors include her son, Ashton Gilmore Jr., Brooksville; four daughters, Joyce W. COMTOIS, MAURICE, 83, of Spring Hill, died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at home. Born in Berlin, N.H., he came here from Merriam, Kan. He was a retired professor with Pembroke Country Day School and volunteered at the Oak Hill Hospital. He was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Council 11877. He was an active member at St. Theresa Catholic Church. GABRIELE, MICHAEL PATRICK, 71, of Weeki Wachee, died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at Hernando-Pasco Hospice in Brooksville. Born in Pittsfield, Mass., he was a seasonal resident from Roswell, N.M. He was a graduate of the University of Maine, where he received an associate's degree. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a volunteer Christian missionary on the Navajo Nation for several years and was a member of the House of Prayer Lutheran Church there. Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Leilani; three daughters, Debra Krasniak, Buxton, Maine, Kelly Holt, West Springfield, Mass., and Vanessa Gabriele, Atlanta; a brother, Arthur Gabriele Jr., Clearwater; a sister, Carolyn Fairwell, Dunedin; several nieces and nephews; and four grandchildren. McELLIGOTT, IRENE V., 96, of Brooksville, died Sunday (Feb. 23, 2003) at home. Born in Traverse City, Mich., she came here 28 years ago from Chicago. She was a founder of the Spring Hill Senior Citizens Enrichment Club. She was involved in the community and was a member of ARC. She was Catholic. Survivors include five nieces, including Deanne Whitten, Brooksville; many great-nieces and nephews; and many great-great-nieces and nephews. MILLS, NORMA U., 52, of Spring Hill, died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) in Spring Hill. She came here 11 years ago from her native Hilongos, Philippines. MORTON, DORIS MENGES VARN, of Brooksville, died Thursday (Feb. 27, 2003) in Georgia. Born in Kansas City, Kan., she came to Brooksville 66 years ago from Farmington, Ark. She was a retired chief operator with Bell South with 39 years of service. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, a former member of Junior Service League, and a member of Eastern Star and First United Methodist Church of Brooksville. Survivors include her husband, Edward R.; two sons, Jacob D. Varn, Tallahassee, and Donald C. Varn, Brooksville; two daughters, June V. Brayton, Conyers, Ga., and Margie V. He was a retired engineer for General Motors and was a Coast Guard Merchant Marine veteran. NEWTON, EDWARDO D., 89, of Spring Hill, died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at Hernando-Pasco Hospice in Brooksville. Born in the British Virgin Islands, he came here four years ago from St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. He was Christian and a member of the New Beginnings Life Center. SWINSON, LEON J., 82, of Spring Hill, died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at Heartland of Brooksville. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he came here in 1982 from Stonybrook, N.Y. He worked as an architect and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a lifetime member and past commander of the Hernando Beach VFW and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. He received the Caritas Award from the Catholic Charities in Long Island. He attended St. Theresa Catholic Church, where he was an Eucharistic minister. Survivors include his wife, Katherine; two sons, Kenneth, Rockwall, Texas, and Michael J. Spring Hill; two daughters, Noreen Menendez, Seattle, and Denise Surdukowski, Wyoming, Del.; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. SYNYCHAK, MARIA, 78, of Masaryktown, died Wednesday (Feb. 26, 2003) at home. She was born in Kiev, Ukraine. During World War II, she was taken from there by German forces and held until the end of the war. She and her husband owned and operated a 60-acre farm in Masaryktown from 1962 to 1987. She was active at the St. Andrew's Ukraine Catholic Church. She was a retired dental hygenist. She was a member of the Mariner United Methodist Church, where she served in the choir. She was born in Tampa and came here in 1967 from New York and returned to Tampa in 1995. She was an actuarial assistant for an insurance company and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. She was a graduate of Florida State University, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi. She attended Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Temple Terrace. GONZALEZ, LUISA S., 97, of Fort Lauderdale, died Monday (Feb. 24, 2003) at Manor Pines Convalescent Home. Born in Spain, she moved to Tampa as a child and to Fort Lauderdale in 1997. She was a cigar maker until the late 1930's, a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, and was active in the Red Cross during World War II. She was a member of the Centro Austrians, Tampa. HERSOM, VIOLA M., 83, of Tampa, died Thursday (Feb. 27, 2003). Born in Davenport, Iowa, she moved to Tampa in 1931. She was a volunteer with the Red Cross, Tampa General Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital and Meals On Wheels. He spent the remaining years of his career as chief of the radiology department at Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. - JOHNSON, M. IVER, 102, of Largo, died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. He was born in Varberg, Sweden, and came here in 1975 from North Attleboro, Mass. He worked 30 years for Evans Case Co., North Attelboro, and retired as chief engineer. After retiring, Johnson and a partner opened Doran & Johnson Manufacturing Co., making decorative metal parts for stereo components, radios and televisions. After moving to Largo in 1975, he formed a Swedish male quartet that expanded into the Suncoast Veterans Chorus -- a unit of the American Union of Swedish Singers -- and performed throughout the United States and Scandinavia.
