BOWERS, JOHN PAUL, 53, of Inverness, died Tuesday (March 18, 2003) at home. Born in Tecumseh, Mich., he came here 25 years ago from Toledo, Ohio. He was a certified nurse's assistant with Surrey Place Convalescent Center in Lecanto. He was an Army veteran during the Vietnam War and was Baptist. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Sandy J. CABLE, LORNA JEAN CROW, 77, of Inverness, died Wednesday (March 19, 2003) in Inverness. Born in Battle Creek, Mich., she came here in 1998 from Gulf Shores, Ala. She was a secretary with State Farm Insurance, Battle Creek, with 15 years of service. She was a golfer, member of the Inverness Golf & Country Club and was Presbyterian. Survivors include her husband of 21 years, Paul L.; three sons, Robert, Cresesco, Mich., Phillip, Marshall, Mich., and Steven, Clemox, Mich.; a brother, Richard Budd, Apache Junction, Ariz.; a sister, Virginia Little, Battle Creek; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. ST. PIERRE, ROBERT N., 61, of Lecanto, died Monday (March 17, 2003) at Shands at the University of Florida, Gainesville. Born in Lawrence, Mass., he came to Florida in 1986 from Derry, N.H. He was employed in software management and development for Itek Composition Systems, Nashua, N.H. He was a Marine Corps veteran. He was employed by the Citrus County Road Department and was Catholic. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Joyce; a son, Mark M., Lancaster, N.H.; a daughter, Jennifer L. Dick, Grayling, Mich.; a sister, Doris Corbett, Stewartstown, N.H.; and six grandchildren. STEELE, JAMES R. "JIM," 80, of Crystal River, died Wednesday (March 19, 2003) at home. Born in White Plains, N.Y., he came here in 1983 from Medina, Ohio. He was a construction foreman for the Cleveland Board of Education. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a charter member and board member of the Riverhaven Community Club. He was a member of the Seven Rivers Golf & Country Club. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder on the Sessions. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Beatrice; a son, Richard, Eagan, Minn.; two daughters, Jacqueline Swaney, Medina, and Cary Jane Striker, Valley City, Ohio; and a grandson. GROLZ, GEORGE C. II, 76, of Spring Hill, died Wednesday (March 19, 2003) at home under the care of his family and Hernando-Pasco Hospice. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he came here 30 years ago from New York. He was a Navy and Coast Guard veteran and served as a lieutenant commander. He was a retired New York City firefighter and member of the New York City Fire Department Union. He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed traveling and boating. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn: four daughters, Janet Rios, Spring Hill, Nancy Connelly, Pine Bush, N.Y., Lynn Reich, Palmer, Alaska, and Barbara Smith, Teaneck, N.J.; a son, George Grolz III, Mount Sinai, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. HOFFMAN, SANDRA KAY, 62, of Brooksville, died Friday (March 14, 2003) at Brooksville Regional Hospital. Born in Yakima, Wash., she came to Florida five years ago and worked in customer service. PALER, CLARA A., 74, of Brooksville, died Wednesday (March 19, 2003) at Hernando-Pasco Hospice, Brooksville. Born in Clarion, Pa., she came here 18 years ago from Lorain, Ohio. PIERSON, THEODORE C., 70, of Brooksville, died Monday (March 17, 2003) at home. Born in Detroit, he came here six years ago from Cedar Springs, Mich. He was a construction operating engineer and an Army National Guard veteran. He was Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Marie; five children; and three grandchildren. TEGGE, HERMAN PHILIP, 86, of Trenton, formerly of Spring Hill, died Tuesday (March 18, 2003) at Nature Coast Hospital in Williston. Born in Pittsburgh, he was a retired transformer welder. He was an Army veteran of World War II and member of the American Legion. He was a member of the Brooksville Elks Lodge and was Catholic. BROWNELL, STEPHEN BURR, 59, of Brandon, died Tuesday (March 18, 2003). Born in Newport, R.I., he graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Stanford University and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He founded Brownell Construction Co., Inc., where he worked in commercial construction until his retirement in 2002. He was a 20 year member of Tampa Sailing Squadron in Apollo Beach. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Kathleen; his parents, Henry W. Brownell, M.D. and Sally J. FIEDLER, ROBERT H., 67, of Tampa, died Saturday (March 15, 2003). Born in Mankato, Minn., he lived in Tampa for 51 years and worked in the windows industry. GONZALEZ, STEPHEN MARK, 48, of Tampa, died Monday (March 17, 2003). He worked for the Hillsborough County School System for 30 years. HENDRICKS, EDYTHE JOYCE, 84, of Valrico, died Saturday (March 15, 2003) at Brandon Regional Hospital. Born in St. Louis, she came to the Tampa area from Jennings, Mo., several years ago. HUTCHINSON, JAMES SHERMAN, MSGT. USAF RETIRED, 74, of Temple Terrace, died Sunday (March 16, 2003) at University Community Hospital. A native of Tampa, he came to the area in 1985 from Heidelberg, Germany and was a automobile salesman for Ferman Chevrolet in Tampa. Survivors include a son, Jason Hutchinson, Heidelberg, Germany; and two brothers, Walter Eason Hutchinson, Tampa and Alan Hutchinson, Lakeland. Veterans Cremation and Burial Society, Clearwater.
KATTELL, RENEE LEE, 41, of Seffner, died Monday (March 17, 2003). Originally from Bingham, N.Y., she worked as a waitress and owned Donita's Consignment. KING, BARBARA IRENE PETRIE EXUM, 74, Thonotosassa, died Monday (March 10 , 2003) at University Community Hospital. She was born in Oswego, N.Y. and came to the Tampa area in 1950. She was an award-winning artist and musician, well known in bluegrass music circles where she performed with her late husband, Thonotosassa native "Baby" Ray Exum. More recently she performed with her four daughters as the Exum Angel Band, appearing at the annual Dade City Heritage Festival and the 51st annual Florida Folk Festival. At the age of 72, she began to accompany the band on bass and was learning banjo. She was a member of the Church of God and the Society for Preservation of Early Country and Western Music. Survivors include her husband Carlos "Red"; four daughters, Bonnie Exum Potvin, Tampa; Sharron Exum Parker and Rhonda Exum Chase, both of Thonotosassa, and Barbara Jean Exum Muntean, Lakeland; two sons Jesse Lamont Exum and Kenneth Ray Exum, both of Thonotosassa; a brother, Lester Petrie of Thonotosassa; 23 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. LAYER, LIONEL LEE, 70, of Seffner, died Tuesday (March 18, 2003) at his residence. He was a retired electrician with the local union IBEW 915 and was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Born in Atlanta, she moved to Tampa in 1951 from Rico, Ga. then in 1981 moved to Hudson. She was a retired clerk for Richard's Drugs, Tampa and a member of Beacon Baptist Church. KING, JOHN H., 60, of St. Petersburg, formerly of Dade City, died Tuesday (March 18, 2003) at home after a lengthy illness. He came to Florida in 1949 from his native Ohio. He was a decorated Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He served with the 2/35th Infantry Division and was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster for valor. He was a member of the Central Christian Church, St. Petersburg and the Red Cross. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed playing chess. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sofia; two sons, Jorge and Evaristo Jr., six daughters, Carmen Romero, Soledad Petti-Willis, Consuelo Gomez, Esperanza Luengas, Amparo Gonzales and Piedad Gonzalez, all of Florida; and 11 grandchildren. - WILLIE, RUSSELL, 85, a winter resident of Clearwater, died Saturday (March 15, 2003) at Bayfront Medical Center, St. Petersburg. He was born in Detroit and had been a winter visitor since 1990 from McHenry, Ill. He retired as an advertising manager from Norge Appliances, a division of Borg-Warner, Chicago. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He attended First Christian Church, Clearwater. - KIRK, MURIEL S., 97, of St. Petersburg, died Wednesday (March 19, 2003) at Westminster Shores Health Center. Born in Westfield, N.J., she came here in 1946 from Vermont, N.J. She retired from the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Art in 1976 after 11 years. She also was secretary to Margaret Acheson Stuart, a philanthropist for whom the museum's Stuart Society is named. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in St. Petersburg. She began a membership program at the St. Petersburg Historical Museum and coordinated membership at the Arts Center, where she was its president in 1979 and 1980 and served on its board. She exhibited her paintings in the city's public buildings. She was a former president of Women of Rotary and the Soroptimist club and delivered Meals-on-Wheels.
