HEALTHSOUTH OFFICER PLEADS GUILTY: The suspended chief financial officer of rehabilitation clinic operator HealthSouth Corp. became the second company executive to plead guilty to criminal charges in a huge accounting fraud. William T. Owens, placed on leave March 20 along with HealthSouth chairman and chief executive Richard Scrushy, admitted his guilt Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Birmingham, Ala., to federal fraud and conspiracy charges. Owens, 44, of Birmingham, faces a maximum of 30 years in prison and as much as $5.5-million in fines, said prosecutors, who agreed to recommend a lighter penalty in return for his cooperation. Owens and Scrushy were suspended last week after the SEC filed a lawsuit accusing Scrushy and the company he founded of overstating profits by at least $1.4-billion since 1999.
