  • COOK, DOUGLAS LEE, 70, of Inverness, died Friday (April 4, 2003) in Inverness. He came here in 1999 from his native, Winston-Salem, N.C. He was a warehouseman in the tobacco industry and an Army veteran of the Korean war. He was a member of Masonic Lodge, Kernersville, N.C., honorary member of Lion's Club, Rural Hall, N.C., American Trapshooter's Association, and First Baptist Church of Rural Hall. Survivors include his wife, Eula; two daughters, Catherine Hooks, Lewisville, N.C., and Karen Brown, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; a stepson, Norford Cromeens, Lewisville; a stepdaughter, Margarita Roberts, New York City; a sister, Barbara Ziglar, Rural Hall; and six grandchildren.   • HEWITT, FRANKLIN DAVID "BUD,' 85, of Floral City, formerly of St. Petersburg died Saturday (April 5, 2003) at Citrus Memorial Hospital, Inverness. Born in Chicago, he came here in 1979 from St. Petersburg. He was a retired commercial artist, a writer in the graphic and printing industry, and a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as chief quarter master with two invasions in the Mediterranean and five invasions in the Pacific Theater. He was an avid sailboat racer. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mabel; a son, David, Seminole; a daughter, Susan Porter, Simpsonville, S.C.; a sister, Mary Hicks, St. Petersburg; and three grandsons. Chas. E.   • SCHENA, IRIS MARY, 80, of Citrus Hills, died Friday (April 4, 2003) in Inverness. Born in England, she came here in 1991 from Peabody and East Boston, Mass. She was a registered nurse and a member of LeRoy Rooks VFW Auxiliary Post 4252, Hernando, Citrus Hills Golf and Country Club, and Women's Club of Citrus Hills, a charitable organization. She enjoyed knitting, playing cards, Scrabble and canasta. She was Catholic.   • DROLSHAGEN, JOHN EMMETT, 80, of Plant City, died Thursday (April 3, 2003) at his home. Born in Detroit, he was a resident of Plant City for 29 years. He served three years with the U.S. Army Air Forces in the European Theatre. He was a retired president and longtime board member of Sunshine State Federal Savings and Loan of Plant City, vice president and controller of First Federal Savings and Loan Association of the Palm Beaches, accounting instructor at Palm Beach Junior College; treasurer and controller of Peoples Federal Savings and Loan of Detroit. He also served on the Board of Directors for South Florida Baptist Hospital. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Power Squadron and the Lions Club. He held state offices in Sons of the American Revolution and Girl Scouts. He was a member and supporter of St. Clement Church in Florida and Prince of Peace in North Carolina. He earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Detroit.   • CACYUK, JOHN JACK, 84, of Holiday, died Thursday (April 3, 2003) at James A. Haley VA Medical Center, Tampa. Born in Binghamton, N.Y., he came here seven years ago from Homosassa. He was a retired machinist for Stowe Manufacturing, Binghamton, and an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Special Forces with Merrill's Marauders.     • RUNKLE, DR. T.J. JR. "JERRY," 60, of Largo, died Friday (April 4, 2003) at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa. Born in Chattahoochee, he moved to Tallahassee more than 30 years ago, to Brooksville in 1989 and to Largo in 1992. He was assistant superintendent of finance and management for Pinellas County Schools and an adjunct professor for Nova University Southeast, National Louis University and University of South Florida. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in math and philosophy and a doctorate in symbolic logic and education administration from Florida State University. He was formerly an assistant professor at FAMU and FSU, a planning director of Leon County Schools and deputy superintendent of Hernando County Schools. He is a member of the superintendent's cabinet for Pinellas County schools, a member of the Florida School Finance Officers Association and was appointed by a former education commission to the Finance Council Board for State of Florida Schools. He is a member of St. Brendan Catholic Church, Clearwater, and the FSU Booster Club. He was an avid traveler and a member of the Ramblin' Renegades chapter of the Florida Motor Coach Association. He graduated from Western Reserve Academy, Hudson, Ohio, and earned his master's degree at Harvard Business School. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was an avid bridge player and enjoyed arts, cars and music.     • O'CONNELL, CAROL ANN, 63, of Oldsmar, died Thursday (April 3, 2003) at home under the care of Hospice of the Florida Suncoast. She was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and came here in 1970 from Carteret, N.J. She worked as a night manager for Howard Johnson Restaurant in Clark, N.J., and managed several dental practices in Florida. She retired from the Clearwater Police Department after working for the Investigations Division, Office of the Chief, and the Patrol Division, Patrol Commander's Office, after serving 18 years. She was a member of Espiritu Santo Catholic Church, Safety Harbor, and the Knights of Columbus, Ladies Auxiliary. She was born in Springfield, Tenn., and came here in 1983 from Port Richey. She worked in both Tennessee and Florida as a jewelry store manager and was an award winning quilter. She graduated from Tulane University and earned a master's degree in psychology from Eckerd College and Nova University. He attended the First Church of the Nazarene of Pinellas Park. He was a chief quarter master in the Navy during WWII and participated in two invasions in the Mediterranean and five invasions in the Pacific Theater. He was an avid sailboat racer.     • HIGH, ELLEN LOUISE, 97, of St. Petersburg, died Saturday (April 5, 2003) at Westminster Shores Nursing Home. She was born in Carroll, Ill., and came here in 1964 from India. She was a nurse and served as a missionary for 26 years. She worked with orphans in China and India. She was a member of First Church of God, the Literacy Society of St. Petersburg and the Red Cross of Britain.     • LEGATE, GREGORY M., 50, of St. Petersburg, died Friday (April 4, 2003) at home. He was born in Jerseyville, Ill., and came here 37 years ago from Grafton, Ill. He was a carpenter. He was Presbyterian. Survivors include his parents, Peggy and Marlo Legate, both of Atlanta; a brother, Brian, St. Petersburg; and three sisters, Sandra Perkinson and Laurel Sklenar, both of Atlanta, and Melinda Johnson, St. Louis.     • SPENCER, WILLIAM T., 75, of St. Petersburg died Saturday (April 5, 2003) at Bayfront Medical Center. Born in Mingo Junction, Ohio, he came here in 1950 from Bloomingdale, Ohio. He was an Army veteran of WWII. He was a member of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsworkers AFL-CIO Local 1 in Florida, the Roadrunners Motor Coach Club, the Scottish Rite and Allendale United Methodist Church. He was a Mason. Survivors include two sons, Donald and Thomas, both of St. Petersburg; a daughter, Sharon Overman, Edgewater; a sister, Katherine Starr, Orlando; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.     • STEWART, WILLIE "BUFFALO," 68, of St. Petersburg, died Saturday (April 5, 2003) at Bayfront Medical Center. A native of Jackson, Miss., he came here in 1975 from Titusville. He was a cement finisher for W.L. Cobb Construction for more than 30 years and for Pepper Construction for more than 10 years before retiring in 1995. Survivors include three sons, Kermit Anderson and Dante Beckford, both of St. Petersburg, and Willie Stewart, California; three daughters, Annette Stewart and Andera Houston, both of Titusville, and Robin Stewart, Orlando; six sisters, Rosa Lee Allen and Eula Mae Brown, both of St. Louis, and Bernice Martin, Vera Jenkins, Ellen Shafford and Annie Maner, all of Jackson, Miss.; three brothers, Smiley Stewart, Eddie Stewart and Tommy Dean Stewart, all of Jackson; 10 grandchildren; and a companion, Virgil Beckford, St. Petersburg.     • WALSH, HELEN K., 79, of St. Petersburg, died Friday (April 4, 2003) at St. Petersburg General Hospital. She was born in Linden, N.J., and came here in 1967 from Elizabeth, N.J. She worked for First Union Bank and Trust in the investment department. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and was active in Five Towns associations. Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Patricia Walsh, Portland, Maine; a son, William F. Walsh, Westfield, N.J.; and a grandson, Jason Omasta, St. Petersburg.     • BOYER, RUTH A. "DOLLY," 81, of Seminole, formerly of Largo, died Thursday (April 3, 2003) at Oak Manor Nursing Center, Largo. Born in Pittsburgh, she came here in 1982. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Largo. Survivors include a daughter, Penny Geiger, Largo; three grandsons, Budd Geiger, Timothy Geiger and Scott Geiger, all of Largo; and two great-grandsons.     • NOLIN, LOUIS EDWARD, 89, of Seminole, died Friday (April 4, 2003) at Tierra Pines Nursing Home, Largo. He was born in Manitoba and came here in 1998 from International Falls, Minn. He was the owner of the Woodland Inn in Ray, Minn., and retired in 1978 from the MDW Railway company. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was Catholic. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Anna; four sons, Vincent, Minneapolis, Tony and John, both of Palmer, Alaska, and Patrick, Fairbanks, Alaska; four daughters, Anna Maria Hausdorf, Seminole, Judy Iverson, International Falls, Angela Johnson, Fairbault, Minn., and Patricia Edington, Minneapolis; two sisters, Theresa Nordluf, Tuscon, Ariz., and Hermance Terbest, California; 23 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.     Treasure Island

    • WAITE, LEONARD, 82, of Treasure Island, died Friday (April 4, 2003) at Palms of Pasadena Hospital, South Pasadena. He was born in Birmingham, Pa., and came here in 1997 from Newark, Ohio. He was a public affairs officer at the Newark Air Force Base in Heath, Ohio, and was the founder and editor of On Target newspaper, a weekly publication for base employees. He worked on the Pennsylvania railroad, building railroad cars in Altoona, Pa., and later traveling on a work train replacing railroad ties. He also worked as a news announcer and copywriter for radio and television in Pennsylvania, and at the age of 12 he worked as a social reporter for a local newspaper. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a 1948 graduate of Pennsylvania State University's School of Journalism. He was a member of the Unitarian Universalist United Church in St. Petersburg and the Treasure Island Yacht Club. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Helen; three daughters, Judith Allee, Newark, Ohio, Cynthia Waite, Los Angeles, and Pamela Foye, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son, Charles Jeffrey Waite, Cincinnati; two sisters, Jane Wilson, Austin, Texas, and Betty Mogle, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two brothers, Gary, Springfield, Mo., and Jerry, Harrisburg, Pa.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
