Cameron Sokolik, a seventh-grader at Orange Grove Middle School of the Arts, is among 38 youths from across the country selected as an award winner in the Nestle Very Best In Youth 2003 Program. Sokolik, son of Joel and Vicki Sokolik of Tampa Palms, was chosen by Nestle USA and Reading Is Fundamental for demonstrating his commitment to reading, academic excellence and making a tangible contribution to the quality of life in his community.

LIGHT RAIL APPROVED IN THEORY -- The Federal Transit Administration on Monday approved a 20-mile light rail system that would connect downtown Tampa with Hyde Park, the Westshore Business District and New Tampa. The move clears the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority to buy right of way, seek permits, design and build the rail system. But HARTline must find the $985-million it estimates the system will cost to build. And that will be no small task for the cash-strapped agency that runs the county's bus system and trolley.

Prep Notebook: Chamberlain softball heads to district
NORTH TAMPA -- The Chamberlain softball team has had little trouble dominating opponents throughout the regular season. In fact, the Chiefs won 17 of their first 22 games and won many of those games in abbreviated, five-inning fashion. So when it came time to clinch the top seed for the Class 5A, District 8 tournament, Chamberlain did so in its usual style.

Sports Digest: Westchase race is school fundraiser
Westchase Elementary will host a Run for Cover 5K race on Saturday, starting at Village Plaza and proceeding west along Linebaugh Avenue. Participants will receive a T-shirt, sponsor packet and refreshments after the race. Proceeds will help purchase a cover for the Westchase Elementary P.E. court.
