Tampa Bay area athletes won 205 medals in 17 sports at the 12th Annual Florida Senior Games State Championships, hosted in December by The Villages. Area athletes brought home 103 gold, 61 silver and 41 bronze medals. The games featured a record 2,344 participants competing in 23 sports and events.

Highlights of bay area athletes included James Anderson, 80, of New Port Richey setting swim records in the 80-84 age group in all five events he entered. He broke the 200-yard individual medley record by 27 seconds. Bay area swimmers accumulated a total of 64 medals, including 31 golds.

The horseshoes competition featured two of Florida's top pitchers in the 80-84 group. Warren Woolsey of Clearwater and James Adcox of Beverly Hills both have ringer averages of more than 70 percent from the 30-foot range and met in a gold-medal showdown.

Adcox built an early lead with a 12-5 advantage before Woolsey began his comeback. Down 15-13, Woolsey scored nine points in his last two sets of throws to win 22-15. Woolsey finished with 21 ringers, Adcox 20.

In archery, Gary Lewis of Hudson had the top score in the compound release event with 849 of a possible 900 points.
