ST. PETERSBURG - A 45-year-old man was killed when a car struck him on Fourth Street near 13th Avenue S, police said.

The man, whose name was not released Saturday, was crossing Fourth Street on Friday when a 1983 Cadillac heading north saw him, police said.

Michael J. Byrd, 20, of St. Petersburg, told police that while he was trying to switch lanes, the man stumbled backward. He was pronounced dead on the scene shortly after 6 p.m., police said.

Neither Byrd nor his passenger, Calvin Byrd, 21, of St. Petersburg, was injured, police said.

An investigation is continuing.
