NFL

Things that make you go hmmm!

By ROGER MILLS
Published January 4, 2004

They simply find a way to win. The Patriots are 14-2 but haven't been labeled a juggernaut because of how they have won. With the exception of a 31-0 beating of the Bills and a 31-10 rout of the Eagles in Week 2, the Patriots have won a bunch of close games. Only six victories came by more than eight points.

If the Colts win the Super Bowl, Tony Dungy will join Mike Ditka and Tom Flores as the third to win rings as players and coaches.

Tampa native Darrell Jackson averaged 19.4 yards per catch on third down for the Seahawks, best in the NFL among players with at least 13 catches on third down. He's a free agent after the season.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw 12 interceptions on the road and none at home.

Seahawks running back Shaun Alexander loves prime time. He has averaged 5.4 yards a carry with seven rushing touchdowns in four prime-time games since 2001.

Explain this one: The Chiefs won 13 games but allowed a league-worst 5.2 yards per carry.

The Cowboys had the top-ranked defense for the fourth time. In two of the previous three - 1977 and '92 - the Cowboys were Super Bowl champions. In the other - 1994 - they advanced to the NFC Championship Game.
