FORT LAUDERDALE - A 10-month-old girl was removed from life support Saturday, four days after she was shaken furiously by her mother, police said.

Sashine Howell, 23, was held without bail after her arrest Thursday on an aggravated child abuse charge, which has been upgraded to murder, the Broward County Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff's officials said Howell shook her daughter, Faith, on Dec. 30. The toddler was taken to Memorial Regional East Hospital in Hollywood and placed on life support.

Howell has another child, who has been placed in protective custody, officials said.

Elderly woman dies in fire after rescue fails

JACKSONVILLE - A Jacksonville woman died in a house fire after a neighbor unsuccessfully tried to rescue her, officials said.

Louisa Young, 88, was pronounced dead Friday after rescue personnel pulled her body out of her home.

A neighbor had tried to get inside after discovering flames late Thursday night, but burglar bars on the front of the house and back door might have blocked him, police said.

The fire's cause has not yet been determined.
