TAMPA - A Tampa man was killed and his passenger critically injured Saturday when their speeding car rammed into a palm tree, authorities said.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, John Luther Parham, 21, was driving a 1987 Acura at a high rate of speed on Harney Road when it left the road about 5:55 p.m. Parham overcorrected and the car went across the road, north of River Terrace Drive, and struck a large palm tree.

Parham flew through the windshield and died. His passenger, 21-year-old Jarvis Bell of Tampa, had to be extricated from the car. Bell was in critical condition at a hospital Monday.

Neither man was wearing a seat belt, according to police.
