The Southwest Florida Water Management District crews are preparing to stage controlled burns this month on land managed by the district.
The agency, commonly known as Swiftmud, announced plans Monday to burn about 435 district-owned or managed acres in small, manageable parcels.
Swiftmud plans fires in three areas: the agency's Upper Hillsborough tract, 3 miles east of Zephyrhills; the Connerton property, 7 miles north of Land O'Lakes; and the Cypress Creek property, 3 miles east of Land O'Lakes.
According to a news release issued by Swiftmud, the fires are designed to mimic natural fire cycles in a controlled situation to avoid uncontrolled wildfires. The fires will be set as weather conditions allow.
