Northside Christian started the new year with a tournament championship.
The Mustangs, who went into Tampa Cambridge's tourney last weekend 1-2-1, won three consecutive games to take the title.
Northside defeated Wesley Chapel 2-1 in the championship Saturday. Junior midfielder Megan Allums was voted tournament MVP, and sophomore Sophie Dembroski led the Mustangs in scoring with five goals.
Dembroski had a hat trick in Northside's first game against Armwood, a 4-1 win. The Mustangs also defeated Tampa Prep 3-1, a team they lost to 4-0 a few weeks earlier.
"What a great starting off point," Northside coach David Veit said.
The Mustangs have outshot most of their opponents, but now have more to show for it, Veit said.
Eighth-grader Jessica Marzi started at goalkeeper for the first time in the tournament, playing so well that Veit said she's earned a permanent place there.
