Big second half helps Warriors to tie

SEMINOLE - Osceola came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to tie Lakewood on Wednesday.

The Warriors were all offense during the second half, plugging away until the 58th minute, when Thomas Schreck lined a free kick just past the wall. Less than five minutes later, Jason Villalba broke free to score the tying goal.

The Warriors have just one loss in Class 4A, District 13, one fewer than the Spartans. Osceola (5-1-2) had many chances during the second half and easily could have had more goals. Schreck had a goal called back early because he was offsides. Schreck, who has been out with a broken foot, played his first game of the season. Although Lakewood (3-4-1) didn't have many shots, the ones it did have were near target. After getting two good goals, one from Kevin Larson and another from Carlos Pineros, Lakewood was shut down during the second half.

"I thought we did really well," Lakewood coach Istvan Horvath said. "(Osceola) didn't create many chances in the first half."

Then Osceola did the same to the Spartans.

"Tactically, we lost the game," Horvath said.

In the girls game, Lakewood defeated Osceola 3-2 to remain undefeated in the district. It was 2-2 at halftime, but the Spartans scored in the 76th minute. Michelle Marshall passed to Abbie Harms, who was sprinting down the center of the field. Harms shot from about 16 yards just before colliding with Osceola's charging goalie, Jenna Pine. Both went down, and the ball went in.

The Warriors were strong early even without their leading scorer, Erica Civello, who had a death in the family. It was the third time Lakewood (10-2) has beaten Osceola (10-5) this season, but only two count as district games.
