Vandy teammates take early lead at New Year's

Vanderbilt teammates Lance Goodson and Luke List took the first-round lead at the New Year's Invitational amateur tournament at St. Petersburg Country Club, shooting 5-under 67. There are three rounds left.

Goodson, starting on No. 18, birdied it plus Nos. 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. List, a freshman, teed off on No. 1, getting a birdie on it, 2, 3, 5 and 6. The teammates have a two-stroke lead over seven others, six of them also college players.

Shooting 69 on a mild but breezy day were Michael O'Neal of Illinois; Duke Butler IV of Florida; Jeff Rieman of LSU; Brandon Waldrop of Kentucky; Andrew Pratt of Tennessee; Andrew Paduch of East Tennessee State and Tony MacKinnon, a scratch golfer from New Brunswick (Canada).

Don Lucas of Valrico leads the senior division with a 71. St. Petersburg's Buddy Lee shared second (76) with defending champion Brian Jeffery of Ontario and Dennis Williams, a member of Cypress Run in Tarpon Springs.

Today's round starts at 11 a.m.
