Gymnastics squads fare well in meets

The Apollo School of Gymnastics competed last month in the Women's AAU State Championships in Tampa and in the Dan Gatsinos Memorial Judges Cup (men's) in Orlando.

The Class 4 team placed third overall and included Sterling Jackson, 10, finishing third in the vault and third in the high bar. He was fourth in the all-around competition.

Jordan Loscalzo, 13, took second in the pommel horse and high bar, third in the parallel bars and first in the all-around.

Grant Brittain, 13, finished third in the floor exercises and second in the parallel bars for an all-around second-place performance.

The Class 6 squad was seventh. Jeffrey Baumgartner, 9, claimed third in the parallel bars, and Travis Lombardi was third in the parallel bars and second in the high bar.

In the women's AAU championships, Apollo placed a number of girls in numerous events.

Kassy Kogut captured second in the vault for the level 4 elite (9-year-olds). Sienna Davis finished third (vault) and second (bars) in the level 4A (8-year-olds).

Rebecca Stewart was second on the bars for level 4B, including 5-7-year-olds.

Other finishers were Sarah Spurgeon, Jessica Stewart, Katelyn Montagna, Brenna Kirk and Madison Breese. Montagna and Breese came in third all-around, and the level 4 team placed ninth overall.

In level 5, Taylor Lubecki, Molly Nelson, Gracie Kobitter, Ashlee Roberts and Kathryn Stacy placed in events, including the vault, balance beam, floor and bars. The squad was sixth.

BAYSIDE GYMNASTICS: The team, coached by Tom Ward, competed in the state championships for levels 4-6 in Tampa and Cocoa Beach.

Kate Shanahan placed seventh in the vault and eighth on the floor for level 6.

In level 5, place-winners were Allasyn Lieneck (fifth, vault), Taylor Ball (fifth, vault; seventh, bars; seventh, floor; sixth, all-around) and Ashley Ventura (third, vault; second, beam; fifth, floor; fourth, all-around). Overall, the team was 10th for level 5.

Lana DeBastos was a strong performer in level 4. She took fifth in the vault, 10th on the balance beam, sixth on the floor and eighth all-around.

TAMPA BAY TURNERS: The gymnastics program competed in the state championships, placing third in level 4 and fourth in levels 5 and 6.

For level 6, Aramis Andreatas finished first on the balance beam with a score of 9.375. Lexia Perry won in the vault.

The Turners collected 25 titles with 18 different gymnasts.

SWIMMING: More than 400 swimmers participated in the Jingle Bell meet at the Long Center in Clearwater on Dec. 14-16.

High-pointers for the St. Pete Aquatics team were Tracy Rover in the 11-12 girls division, coming in first with 95 points; and Megan Romano, third in senior girls. St. Pete will participate later this month in a sectional meet in Clearwater.
