Long-leaf pine trees stand tall over an open understory of wiregrass, a landscape that once typified much of Northern and Central Florida. Ocala National Forest is a last refuge for the trees and presents a rare opportunity to see the Florida landscape as naturalists described it in the early 1800s. If completed, the Cross Florida Barge Canal would have passed just a few miles to the north.
