On Tuesday Dr. Dave Bytell drove to the dock with son-in-law Scott Haase, daughter Jeanne Haase and 2-year-old granddaughter Emma Haase, who were visiting from Augusta, Ga. With 5- to 10-knot winds and 1- to 2-foot seas, conditions were perfect for introducing Emma to fishing. Our first stop in 45 feet produced nonstop action with small grouper, grunts and puffers. When Emma reeled up her first fish, a white grunt, with her father's assistance, her squeals of excitement made the day a success even if no other fish were caught. After admiring its colors and allowing her to give it a pat, we carefully released it. Young ones get easily bored, so the use of squid and smaller hooks kept her attention riveted on the rod and reel. It did not take long for her to get tired and take a nap as we moved to 65 feet.
We had the customary live pinfish, frozen Spanish sardines and squid. Every stop showed fish suspended just above the bottom, but they were hesitant to accept those baits alone. A piece of squid coupled with a whole or half sardine on 40-pound test was the key to triggering the bite. We returned with four gags, including two 30-inchers, and many large grunts. Dave and Scott were proud of their catch, but it was obvious they were more proud of Emma's catch and smile.
