Aerial ballet returns to the sky over Treasure Island beach this weekend as hundreds of complex and colorful kites fly in competitions and demonstrations. The annual Kitesville USA event gives amateurs a chance to admire the masters, who compete in single-, dual- and quad-line kite contests, and to learn from them.

You can also see Japanese-style bowed kites (rokkaku) do battle; bid on kites at an auction at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Thunderbird Resort, 10700 Gulf Blvd.; or just sit back and admire the artistry.

The flying continues from 10 a.m. until dusk Saturday and Sunday on the beach behind the Bilmar Resort, 10650 Gulf Blvd. (727) 596-3431 or (813) 948-0854.
