BERLIN - Ed Moses of the United States broke his short-course world record in the 200-meter breaststroke Saturday, beating the mark by 0.25 seconds at a World Cup meet.
He was timed in 2 minutes, 2.92 seconds, topping the record of 2:03.17 set at the same event Jan.26, 2002.
Moses was nearly a second ahead of runnerup Kosuke Kitajima of Japan.
"I wanted that record and I knew one thing - when I hit the hundred the place was going crazy," said Moses, who set the first world record at the two-day meet. "The last 50 meters hurt, but that kept me going."
Slovakia's Martin Moravcova, who has 15 European titles, edged Jenny Thompson in the women's 100 butterfly. She finished in 56.93 to the American's 57.09.
WINTER SPORTS: German ties luge record
Three-time Olympic champion Georg Hackl of Germany won his 32nd World Cup luge event in Winterberg, tying the career record held by Markus Prock of Austria. Hackl had the fastest time in both heats, finishing in 1:51.211.
SPEED SKATING: Jeremy Wotherspoon of Canada won the 500-meter race at the World Sprint Championships in Nagano, Japan. Wotherspoon was timed in 35.25, with American Kip Carpenter 0.11 behind. Erben Wennemars of the Netherlands won the 1,000 in 1:09.46. He had 70.43 points, 0.02 ahead of Wotherspoon in the standings. Japan's Sayuri Osuga (38.79) won the women's 500. Germany's Anni Friesinger won the 1,000 (1:16.70), and Jennifer Rodriguez of the United States was second (1:17.02).
SKIING: Hilde Gerg of Germany won a women's World Cup downhill in Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy, in 1:17.57. Runnerup Renate Goetschl overtook Anja Paerson for first place in the standings. American Lindsey Kildow was a career-best fifth, and teammate Kirsten Clark sixth. ... World Cup leader Janne Lahtela of Finland won his third moguls contest of the season in Lake Placid, N.Y., receiving 26.29 points for his final run. Luke Westerlund was second with 26.10, leading U.S. men into four of the top five places. Jennifer Heil of Canada won her second event of the season with 26.77. American Shannon Bahrke, the Olympic silver medalist, was second at 24.57.
SNOWBOARD CROSS: Simone Malusa won a World Cup event in Arosa, Switzerland, the second victory in two days for Italian men. World champion Karine Ruby of France captured the women's contest in consecutive days.
HORSES: Record payout in Pick Six
A record payout of more than $2.2-million in the Pick Six overshadowed stakes victories by Seattle Fitz and Austin's Mom at Aqueduct. Two bettors collected $1,120,287, the largest payoff for any racing wager in New York.
TAMPA BAY DOWNS: Misguided Left beat Wire Bound by a head in the $60,000 Pasco Stakes. Misguided Left covered 7 furlongs in 1:25.94. Also, jockey Joe Rocco Jr. rode three winners.

BOXING: Ron Siler got his third U.S. amateur title with a 19-10 decision over Charles Huerta in the flyweight division in Colorado Springs. Roberto Benitez captured his fourth title after moving to bantamweight. Brandon Rios (featherweight), Austreberto Juarez (light flyweight) and Devon Alexander (light welterweight) also won.
COLLEGES: Scott Schultz and Zach Wilcox each won two events to lead the Florida swimming and diving team to a 129-113.5 victory against host TCU. ... The Gators' Hamid Mirzadeh beat Alabama's Stephen Mitchell 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinal of the SEC Men's Indoor Tennis Championships in Athens, Ga. UF's Boglarka Berecz and Nina Suvak moved on to the women's semifinal at the Freeman Memorial Championship in Las Vegas with an 8-4 win over Stanford's Amilia Anderson and Joanna Kao. ...
