Rest results in title for the Falcons

Published February 3, 2004

Facing his father in a dual meet last week, Dunedin coach Marc Allison decided to rest some of his wrestlers, giving them time to prepare for the Blue Jacket Invitational and district tournament. The move paid off as the Falcons edged St. Petersburg 164-159 to win Saturday's Blue Jacket Invitational.

"I think it's safe to say that was the school's first tournament title in awhile," said Allison, who took over the program this season.

Despite having just one champion, Dunedin won the title thanks to its depth. The Falcons had 10 wrestlers place in the top four.

The Falcons' lone champion, Adam Weintraub, sealed the title by pinning the Green Devils' Shawn Brownell in the 125-pound match. St. Petersburg tied Bradenton Southeast with four individual champions. The Green Devils' tournament winners were Mike Taylor (119 pounds), Jerrod Douse (130), Morgan Baker (135) and Evanc Rajta (145).

Northeast's Marcus Massey (152), St. Petersburg Catholic's Steve Hubbard (189) and Clearwater Central Catholic's Joe Scala (215) were the county's other champions.

OSCEOLA CRUISES: The Warriors capped their senior night Monday by beating district rival St. Petersburg Catholic 62-17. Because of injuries, the Barons forfeited three weight classes and were behind before the meet started. It got worse during competition as the Warriors built a 39-0 lead.

Mike Houle (160 pounds) and Shane Stidham (171) each recorded pins for Osceola to seal it.
